Best Gift Ideas for a New Big Brother or Big Sister
Welcoming a New Baby
When a new baby is born, many friends and family members flock to the hospital or home to visit the new bundle of joy. Often times they will bring presents to welcome the new little being. While this is much appreciated by most, it does not always please everyone. If there is a big brother or sister in the family they might find this a little insulting. After all, the older sibling has been the king or queen of the roost up until this new little joy entered the family. So why does this baby get all of the presents? Sometimes this is the very beginning of a long road of sibling rivalry. So what can you do to ease this transition? It's easy, bring a little something for the big brother or sister too.

Gift Ideas for a Big Brother or Big Sister
You don't have to bring an expensive gift, anything will truly be appreciated by the sibling. So what are some ideas?
Interest Specific
If you know the child well, you may already know what kinds of things he or she may be interested in. If you are unsure, a quick call to one of the parents to find out would be fine as well. For example, if you know that child likes a particular character like Winne the Pooh or Elmo, you could bring something that has that character on it. If the child enjoys bugs, why not bring a bug catcher or an ant farm?
Books
Books are always a great choice. You could select something that is about being a new big brother or big sister to ease this transition time for him or her. You could relate it to an interest of that child like sports or science. You can even choose a book that is a journal type that allows the older sibling to record his or her impressions, thoughts, and feelings over the next year.
A New Toy
Kids love toys, toys of any kind. You could pick something gender specific like a new truck or a doll. Or you can choose something that is very gender neutral like coloring books or a new DVD. Still not sure that this is a right fit? What about legos or play dough. Most kids love to create and build.
Gift Basket for a Boy or Girl
Gifts for Older Siblings
For kids who are new big brothers or sisters and are beyond the toddler or preschool age, their interests may be a little different. While a great art set or dvd may please them, a gift basket of sorts will also do the trick. Just grab a cute gift bag and start filling! You can fill it with things like snack crackers like goldfish or fruit snacks like organic fruit strips. Choose things that are not perishable so that if in the shuffle of things it gets left out, it does not spoil. If you are still stumped, just pick up a card that tells him or her how proud you are of what a great job they are doing as a new big brother or sister and slip in a gift card. The amount isn't as important as the thought. Kids of the tween age and beyond love gift cards and the excitement of going to the store to chose something special to them.
Appreciation From the Siblings
If you bring the older sibling a gift, not only will they greatly appreciate that you remembered them, but the parents will too. I remember that when I had my son, several friends and family members brought gifts for my daughter. She loved the attention and new surprises and I loved it because it kept her entertained, even if just for a little while!
