Best Ways To Improve Your Art

One thing that many artists, (if not all of us) have in common, the desire to improve our art... no matter the medium.

When trying to improve our art we scrounge and scatter all over the place trying to buy the best books, art supplies we think will help us get better, art classes and such. Hoping that tools, and people holding our hand will make us improve faster.

While in some cases that may be true, and for those who can afford that help, the books and the classes etc by all means do so... but what about for the rest of us? That's who this hub is for, the people who want to improve their art and aren't sure where to start.

Trying to get proportions right is one of the hardest things to do... in some cases the artist can see the mistakes but has no idea where to fix them.. not even how to start. While this is probably the most annoying answer there is, if this is your situation then the best thing you can do is practice and give it time.

Your problem isn't that you don't see the errors but perhaps that you take them to hard.. you are constantly downgrading yourself and because of this end up getting discouraged and suddenly NEED to improve at all costs. When the truth of the matter is your doing better then a lot of people just by seeing the errors, now you need to learn to notice them, learn from them and accept them.. oh yeah, then MOVE ON. Holding on to your mistakes wont help you, let it go and make a commitment to take the time needed to practice and improve.

Whatever it is that you have problems with study it. Learn it, see the shapes and lines and stick them in your head, yes.. now your allowed to OBSESS. The better you know the object the easier you will be able to draw it, however... your first few tries will still stink, you may know how it looks but your hand isn't moving with your head yet.. the picture and movements need time and practice in order to connect with each other.

Your art work is only as good as your mind's ability to understand the reference pictures and move your hand in the same pattern, it's like catching a ball or a baby shaking a rattle.. you have to develop those skills in order to improve.. yes you need to LEARN.

Now for the people who think their art is perfect and flawless...

I'm not going to tell you that your a bad artist, even not seeing your work.. because there is no such thing as a bad artist, just a inexperienced one. I will say, "LIGHTEN UP" You don't NEED to be perfect, no one will hate you if your not.. it's fun to watch people learn.. learning is a part of life. If people keep telling you that you anatomy is off and you should work on it, they aren't trying to be mean, (well, most times anyways!) most of the time they are trying to help, even if at times they are harsh about it, or are sounding like a hmmm, "Complete know-it-all", sound familiar? Yeah thought so.

Chances are if the same thing is being repeated it's true, maybe your anatomy does need work? ;) Improve upon that, find resources.. there are plenty all over the Internet, even sites like YouTube have how-to-draw videos! Work on it and accept that no one is perfect... no, I don't care how unpopular you are, sorry your STILL NOT no one! ^_^

Now for thew people who are about to grab me through the screen and yell "YES, but HOW do you improve?!!" ^_^;

• Practice
• Perseverance
• Patience
• Oh yeah, did I say practice?!

These things will get you far, be patient with your self and your art, you'll get there if you keep it up! Promise! And keep practicing, practice, practice, PRACTICE!!! I know it sound repetitive, and it is but it will get you far. :)
