Birds are amazing creatures. Once you have read this article till the end, you will agree with me about birds being amazing. So here goes the facts...


Did you know there is a poisonous bird? The only known poisonous bird in the world is the hooded pitohui of Papua, New Guinea. The poison is found in its skin and feathers.

The Royal Albatross' eggs take 79 days to hatch. That is a lot of incubation.

There are more than 350 species of parrots in the world.

The most yolks ever found in a single chicken's egg is nine. How would it feel to eat that egg?

The Chameleon can focus its eyes seperately to watch two objects at once.

The heart of a humming bird makes 20% of its body volume.

A humming bird breathes around 300-500 times a minute when active.

Peregrine Falcon is the fastest-moving bird, reaching the diving speeds of 200 mph (320 km/h).

The Humming birds are the only birds that can fly backwards. Don't think they have a reverse gear in them.

More about the flight of a humming bird. It can fly up, down, forward, backward and even upside down. A humming bird can rotate its wings from its shoulder blades, which enables it to hover and fly in different positions.

The smallest parrot species are the Pygmy Parrots, who have an average length of about 8cm.

The now extinct Elephant Bird of Madagascar laid an egg that weighed 27 pounds.

Hummingbirds eat about every ten minutes, slurping down twice their body weight in nectar every day. Still they don't get fat.

Barred owls are the noisiest of the North American owls. Thus they are also called hoot owls.

The male barred owl has a deeper and mellower call than the female.

Did you know there are over 40 million pet birds living in the United States?

An eagle can kill a young deer and fly away with it.

The oldest bird was known as an Archaeopteryx and lived about 150 million years ago. It was the size of a raven, was covered with feathers, and had wings.

American Woodcock is the slowest flying bird with a flying speed of 5mph(8km/h).

Did you know a bird's feathers weigh more than its skeleton does?

Austrich has the largest egg in all birds.

Despite having no external ear(with an exception of some birds), birds hear well.

An ostrich egg needs to be boiled for 2 hours to get a hard-boiled egg. Now that is a lot of work!

We can make millions if we discover the secret to the "Hummingbirds Diet" can you imagine marketing a diet where you can eat every 10 minutes and never gain weight.

Great Hub, UH. You included some very fun and interesting facts about birds. As a big-time movie buff, I'm a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki who always uses the idea of flight and creates all sorts of flying contraptions for his movies. Thanks for your post, BTW. I means a lot to hear your support.

Yes, ethel they are no doubt beautiful and amazing. I am planning to write stuff here on marine life as I have been researching them a bit for some time now for my other sites. The marine life always amuses and amazes me. Some things about them are so unbelievable and they come in such huge variety and that too quite diversified.

Hey wonderful hub and since Ive been living in the USA only a short while ,I still remember clearly the first time I saw a Cardinal land in a tree where I sat surveying this new land. My heart skipped a beat ,I just love their color!!!A dream about an eagle bought me here in a way ,but thats another story.
