Diaphragms: The Pros and Cons
86
Ladies, are you really still using this thing?? This is something Aunt Mildred found liberating – but we’ve come a long way since then, baby. Like, nearly 70 years. That's how long it's been since the device’s heyday. Yeah, it’s really that freaking old. Your Gran probably had one! Ok, maybe that’s not such a good visual, sorry. Statistics allege that only .2% of American women use these, but I have heard an awful lot of chatter about it in recent years, which leads me to believe it’s more common than that. It shouldn’t be, however. It’s a PITA, and I’m going to tell you why. As with previous articles, this is intended for couples who are both monogamous and disease free, looking only to prevent pregnancy.
Pros
It works, if you’ve got it in there correctly – 95% effective.
You can insert it several hours before the action starts, thereby avoiding the mood breaking often experienced when using condoms and the like.
You don’t have to remove it right away (and, in fact, you shouldn’t – for at least 4 - 6 hours.)
It’s relatively cheap, costing between 30 and 40 bucks.
It appears to go unnoticed during the deed, by both man and woman.
They come in both latex and silicone.
Note: If the woman doesn't have a latex allergy, but the man does, she still needs to be using silicone, for his sake.
Cons
It’s not always in there correctly, and has a more accurate efficacy rate of 80%.
You have to be fitted for it. Yes, that’s right. You have to go to your OB/GYN and let them size you up. Boy, doesn’t that sound like a party? God knows the yearly pap smear is already more excitement than most of us can handle.
While the diaphragm only costs 40 or 50 bucks, seeing the doctor for fitting can cost you a couple of hundred.
Oh, and you’ll need to be having that sucker replaced every couple of years as well.
You’ll need to use spermicide with it, or be content with lowering the contraception efficacy by another 20% or so. And spermicide averages about a dollar per use. Which could get pricey if you’re a frequent flyer.
Toxic Shock Syndrome is rare, but a possibility.
Leave it in too long and you could start smelling more than a bit funky down there.
Often reported as contributing to the development of urinary tract infections.
If you really want to use one of these, go ahead. Personally, it sounds like a lot of hassle to me. I’d use a condom before I messed around with one of these. I’d also be too stressed wondering whether or not it was in there correctly!

LOL! Go, Girl! ;)
Is this similar, at least in principle, to the fabled "Sponge"? (The one that sent Elaine Benes into conniption fits when it was discontinued, but I heard is making a real-world comeback)
I've always avoided using one because I figured I'd be too busy wondering if I got it in right to stay in the mood. Funny to think of my grandma having one!
Dude, nice lesson in birth control. Just imagine this. If the Loony Christians and/or even crazier Muslins (there, I said it, yes, the current form of Islam being spread through the world is insane), we would never be able to talk about this stuff, let alone use it. I urge everyone to be Like Isabella Snow; write fun, interesting articles that educate the people! Power to the people.
Livelonger - Yes, kind of.. I'll have to do one on that, too, lol!
Stacie - Yeah I think the same way - how can you relax when you aren't sure you've done it right??
James - Thanks, you're such a sweetie!
I am currently using a Diaphragm. I love it! I went from the Pill to Depo (the shot) and right back to the pill. In the end, I just got sick of putting MORE hormones into my body. I have plenty of those as it is just being a woman. Lucky me, STD's aren't an issue in my relationship. We are eachothers firsts. The diaphragm just fits our relationship and we love not having to use a condom. Hated having to stop in the midst of the heat to put something on that will probably break or slip anyway and just cause me to freak out! It's definitely not for everyone. I have only been using it for a few months but I'm loving it so far. The spermicide does get a little irritating, but to me its worth it in the end.

I used one of these for years, in my early to mid twenties. But I never told a guy I used it - I made them use condoms anyway. I was the safest slut on the block.
