Bratwurst and mustard- Simple, but delicious.

Facts About Bratwurst

Sometimes I just get a hankering for bratwurst. I decided to share my favorite bratwurst recipe here in case others want to give bratwurst a try. It's a classic way to eat bratwurst.

Sheboygan, Wisconsin is known as the "Bratwurst Capital of the World." Famous bratwurst are produced there, including Old Wisconsin bratwurst and Johnsonville bratwurst. The Johnsonville World Bratwurst Eating Championship is held in Sheboygan as well.

To be fair, although Wisconsin natives have adopted bratwurst as their own, bratwurst actually originated across the pond in Germany. Just like the sauerkraut that is often paired with yummy bratwurst, Germans made it first.

Basic Bratwurst Recipe Tips

A bratwurst recipe is fairly easy to make. There are only a few hard and fast rules if you don't want to offend devoted fans of bratwurst. The first rule is that bratwurst should never be fried. The second tip for a bratwurst recipe is never to serve bratwurst on a hot dog bun. Last of all, never use yellow mustard on a bratwurst.

Other than that, it's pretty much up to you. A classic bratwurst recipe is simple, with few ingredients, though. The taste of the yummy bratwurst itself is meant to be the center of attention.

With that being said, here is my version of the classic Wisconsin style bratwurst recipe. This bratwurst recipe makes enough bratwurst for about 3-5 people, depending on how much bratwurst you put on each roll and how much your diners love bratwurst.

Johnsonville Bratwurst, Beer and Onions- Ready for Grilling

Bratwurst Recipe Ingredients

1 pound bratwurst (try to get fresh from a butcher if possible)

2 sliced onions

1/4 cup butter (not margarine!)

3 cans of beer (or bottles)

1 teaspoon pepper

4-5 Italian style hoagie rolls or Italian bread cut to length of bratwurst

Bratwurst Recipe Instructions

Put the bratwurst in a large pot with everything but the rolls, of course. Simmer for about 15 minutes. Keep the liquid simmering and remove the bratwurst.

Then, transfer the bratwurst to an oiled grill that is on medium heat. Grill the bratwurst for about 15 more minutes, making sure to turn the bratwurst to keep them from burning. Immediately spray any flareups with water. You can also use an indoor grill to make your bratwurst.

Place the bratwurst on the hoagie rolls. Top with onions from the leftover liquid.

You can eat this simple bratwurst recipe as is or add favorite condiments or other toppings. I recommend spicy brown mustard and hot sauerkraut. That's it. Some people like ketchup om their bratwurst, too. MMM yummy good bratwurst.

Man, I'm hungry now. I think I'll be making this bratwurst recipe this evening myself.

I actually went out and bought some brats after I posted this. It is supposed to be warm tomorrow. Half of the family is gone, so I'm not having a big Easter dinner. Grilling bratwurst sounds like a delicious idea. And you're welcome.

Hey, what time are we getting started? LOL. I have half the country that will be in for Easter. I have been cooking all day and will continue in the morning. My brother is conducting our church service at my sister's home for us where we will eat and have a huge egg hunt! So, think we can do the Brats for dinner? Now my stomach is growling! I gotta finish those beef tips and feed it!

Our son-in-law gets his brats from a little meat market in Cuba City Wis and they are always better than mine. He claims it's because I use a Weber Genesis gas grill and he uses charcoal in a Weber Kettle but I think that little market has something to do with it! Then there's the great mustard, onion, kraut and beer maranide debates. Gives us plenty to talk about! Great Hub

Bonnie, I hope your Easter dinner went well. I am jealous. I miss big family gatherings.

Shangrila, bratwurst are spicy German sausages. Bratwurst are usually made of pork. Some bratwurst are made of beef or a combination of pork and beef. They are not smoked. They are usually prepared like this recipe or simply grilled. They are very popular for grilling food in the USA, especially in Wisconsin.

Grill'n Guy, I bet that market has a whole lot to do with it! I gotta say, though, that I love charcoal grills. But with the right flavored woods added, gas grills can also produce delicious results.
