What makes Platinum Jewelry Special

Why buy Platinum Jewelry? What makes Platinum special? Why is Platinum Jewelry a status symbol of the elite? Why is it considered as the symbol of love and all things precious?

Platinum is considered as one of the most precious metals. It is in fact 30 times rarer compared to Gold. The rarity and uniqueness of this metal makes it one of the costliest metals for jewelry. Platinum was already highly appreciated for its beauty and durability. Platinum is a dense and heavy metal and very much suited for gemstone studded jewelry, especially diamonds whereas pure gold needs to be alloyed with some other metal to increase its durability. In other words, Platinum requires only a small percentage of alloys of other metals for making jewelry compared to Gold. Platinum Jewelry can be used as a family heirloom as it has a lifespan three times as long as that of gold. Another advantage of Platinum jewelry is that it is hypoallergenic. Because of the high level of purity of platinum jewelry, Platinum does not cause any allergic reactions with the skin for even those having other metal allergies. The color of Platinum is silvery-white. It does not tarnish and is extremely resistant to oxidation and to corrosion of high temperatures or chemical elements. It is also a very good conductor of electricity and a powerful catalyzing agent. Platinum is denoted by the symbol 'Pt’ and has an atomic number of seventy-eight. Like gold, the purity of platinum is also calculated in karats. However, apart from being used in jewelry making, platinum has a vast variety of Industrial applications like making auto catalysts, crude oil refining and for processing petroleum products etc.

The name Platinum is known to have derived from the Spanish 'Platina del Pinto' which can be translated as 'little silver of the Pinto River' which is where the metal was first found. The popularity of Platinum started in the 18th century with King Louis XV of France declaring it as a metal for a king's jewelry. Most of world’s platinum comes from South Africa, Russia, Colombia and Canada.

Caring for Platinum Jewelry

The best thing about platinum is that it stays as it is and never fades. So no maintenance is required. However, dirt and grime can get accumulated in the jewelry making it look dull. Even if the surface become dark because of rough or long time usage, it’s quite easy to regain the sparkle. Apply toothpaste on a towel and rub the jewelry in back and forth friction. After that you may soak the jewelry in a solution made of mild detergent in lukewarm water for 5 minutes and rinse it thoroughly with plain water. Platinum jewelry also does not get damaged or gets scratches easily because of its durability. However, it is advisable to store platinum jewelry separately so that it doesn't rub against other metals or hard surfaces. Also, it is advisable to remove the jewelry when you're working in conditions that may harm it, such as working with chemicals or mud.
