Teach English Abroad with CELTA English Teacher Training

Updated on June 10, 2012

CELTA (or Certificate in English Language Training to Adults) is an internationally recognized English teacher training certificate that will enable you to get great jobs to teach English abroad. I completed this course and now I enjoy llving and teaching English abroad.

The CELTA teacher training course, that over 10,000 people study for each year, is an accepted and proven method of teaching English to students who want to learn English as a second language.

The majority of English teaching jobs require prospective employees to have either a CELTA or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) certification. Employers usually specificy that they require a certificate which has 100+ hours of study and one which includes practical teaching experience. Teaching practice is an important part of the CELTA certification

How Long is the Course?

There are two ways to do your CELTA certificate. Each covers exactly the same material.

1. Four Week Intensive Course

During this course you will be immersed in the ways to teach English as a second language.

When they say intensive, it is! Don't even think about working during the course - the workload is heavy. You will have difficulty even trying to fit part-time work into your schedule while doing this course. I recommend that you postpone your social life for the month as well.

To pass this course you will attend lessons, prepare lesson plans, obsere others on the course with you and experienced teachers etc. In fact, for the duration of the course, you will be working and thinking about TEFL certification from sun up until long after the sun sets.

On the course I completed, we had two teachers with years of classroom experience and they too commented that they found the workload heavy but its worth it.

In some places the intensive course is extended to five weeks but the curriculum and practical teaching aspect is the same.

2. Part time CELTA course

The length of this course varies from centre to centre and the time-frame varies from six weeks to one year.

3.Online

CELTA plan to begin the online option commencing 2012. Check here for updated information.

Once you have this TEFL certification, then you are well equipped for teaching English as a second language. There will be a lot more learning once you are on the job though!

What's covered during the CELTA course?

The course covers effective teaching techniques using a variety of approaches which will prepare you to teach English to adult students but the techniques are just as good with childrent. It includes:

  • 6 hours of practical teaching in front of a class of students
  • classroom observation of other students
  • four written assignments

You will learn about classroom management, the components of language skills: reading, speaking, listening and writing. In addition, there's a strong focus on planning, pronunciation, grammar and language awareness.

As native English speakers we take a lot for granted and the course helps trainees to understand this from the learners perspective.

Where can I do the training course?

The CELTA training course can be taken at any one of 286 approved centres around the world. 54 countries offer this course.

The CELTA English teacher training course is administered and rigourously controlled by Cambridge ESOL so you can be assured of very high standards no matter where you decide to study. Imagine, you could study in one of your dream destinations and then perhaps secure a job afterwards! Many centers will help with job placements.

To do this course you need to be over the age of 20, and although there are exceptions, English should be your first language. Many centers expect you to have a first degree as well.

Note that when it comes to looking for a job, many of the better employers expect you to have at least one degree - the subject matter is not usually critical. However, increasingly employers want a language/linguistic component, particularly for the well paid Middle East positions.

Personally, attaining this CELTA qualification was one of the most exhausting but rewarding experiences of my life. I cannot imagine trying to teach English as a second language without this training.
