Crocodiles in Australia

Have you ever seen a crocodile close up that wasn't in a cage ? The first time you come across a crocodile as you are strolling along the banks of a river is quite an amazing time .

Sure we had seen crocodiles along the Geike Gorge safely from the boat tour , had even touched one that was in a caged envioroment yet this was diferent with no water or cage between me and the crocodile !

Yesterday while out in our tinny on the Ord River I saw eyes peeping out of the water at me close by and disapear fast . As we had been told they pop up about every 5 minutes I kept an eye out & sure enough there it came again, this time a bit further away !

Freshwater Crocodiles

We are mainly getting close to freshwater crocodiles at the moment & they are only found in the provinces of Queensland, Northern Territory, and Western Australia in Australia where we are at the moment .

They are found predominately in freshwater lakes, billabongs, swamps, rivers, creeks, and wetlands, although not by choice. The Australian saltwater crocodile keeps them out of more saline (salty) areas by outcompeting them. However, when this species was near extinction Australian freshwater crocodiles could be found in saltwater. Today, they are found mainly in freshwater and brackish areas. They are not fussy over water, and will live in muddy, clear, fast, still, deep, or shallow water. After the rainy season they move to more permanent areas of water that will not dry up in the dry season, and will rarely eat and hardly grow until they return at the start of the next rainy season.

Malcom Douglas Wilderness Park

As you drive into Broome 16 k's out you will come across the Malcom Douglas Wildlife Park which is well worth a visit as it is a pleasant walk around winding paths shaded by amazing trees as you look into the billabongs where over 200 crocodiles live .

As you stroll along the paths you will also enjoy seeing dingos , Barking Owls, Kangaroos and plenty more wildlife to see up close .

There are crocodiles that are being looked after like Chomp , One eye, Mauler , all names that make you glad they are on the other side of the fence !
