Columbus Discovered
Ever since anniversary which became resolved as Encounter 500, the name Christopher Columbus has conjured up the image of a man who has been lost to the justice of history. There is still so much we do no know about him, yet we can all agree that he encountered the natives of the New World because he was bold enough to challenge the preconceptions of his time. sadly, his voyages of explorations led to the genocide of the native peoples of the Americas, and the transplantation of Africans by a system of modern slavery.
Columbus himself suffered at the hands of enemies. I have sought to pull his own pain into the following piece:

Six thousand miles away

There was no easy route
To China on this globe

New Seville filled with
Dangers like the Old

That island natives could
Throw spears or smiles
Columbus discovered
Now a serenaded hero
Relegated tomorrow

Spices and gold
Poor exchange for a sailor’s soul

That with the proper maps
