Common Wealth Games (CWG) and INDIA
India is about to organize CWG 2010 in unorganized and flooded Delhi where people are battling with dengue and other epidemics. If you ask people what are their views about CWG being organized in India, they will say that it’s a matter of great pride for the whole country because it is organizing such a huge event.
When people answer that it’s a matter of pride for the whole country, they tend to forget the history behind CWG games and the huge amount of unnecessary expenditures wasted to organize this event.
The idea of the games were put forward to King George V in early 1900’s in which it was proposed that all the nations which were “once slave” or “still are the slaves of British Empire” will take part in this game. The event was first held in 1930 under the title of the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The event was renamed as the British Empire andCommonwealth Games in 1954, the British Commonwealth Games in 1970, and gained its current title in 1978. So the truth is that we are organizing these games to tell the whole world that we were once “ruled” by British and we feel proud in organizing the games because we were once the “slaves” of The British.
Now let me tell you about the expenditure of hosting the games. When India won the bid of hosting the games (by bribing $100000 to 72 nations according to latest report) , a handsome budget ranging between 12000 – 15000 crores was proposed for the games. But the budget soared to 75000 crores!!!! only because of our sluggish government which kept on increasing the deadlines for important criterias and construction projects which were very important for hosting the games successfully.
Imagine if Govt. of India would have spent those Rs. 75000 crore in building new hospitals (hospitals in delhi are running out of beds and they could not admit dengue patients any more) and schools; teaching and feeding the poor children (youth illiteracy rate in india is 36%); building godowns to store grains (as lakhs of tonnes of wheat was destroyed in recent past because there weren’t enough godowns to store them); cleaning rivers to overcome flood problem instead of hosting these games.
I will conclude by saying that most of the corrupt politicians and other personnels who were associated with CWG have made their fortunes by grasping a large amount of share from 75000cr. and common people like us will have to pay for the whole thing in form of taxes.
