Make an EZ Platform Bed Frame
Platform beds and platform bed frames themselves are becoming increasingly popular. One wonders if it has to do with the rise in popularity of memory foam mattresses. For a visco elastic memory foam mattress to perform properly it needs to be placed on a solid platform frame. This type of mattress frame will also extend the life of these foam mattresses. A nice wooden platform bed frame purchased at a retail outlet can cost a considerable amount of money these days. If you are a do-it-yourselfer or you simply like home projects that save you money you may want to make a platform bed frame yourself.
In searching the Internet for plans on platform bed frames I noticed most of them required more work and time than I was willing to put in. Also, some of the designs were more complicated than they needed to be. I realized that when a platform frame is completed and a mattress is placed on it, the frame itself is not even visible. So I wondered why they needed to be so elaborate.
I was determined to design and make my own frame. Now I am certainly not a professional carpenter or designer. My goal was to make a frame that was strong and would last a long time. I hate flimsy furniture. I was also determined to make the simplest frame that would require the least amount of time, work, materials and money. The materials for the platform frame detailed below will only cost around $100 dollars. To make this frame the only wood you have to buy is 5 ordinary 2 x 4's at eight feet long and two sheets of Birch plywood at 4 x 8 feet. Cut them as shown in the below pictures.

This platform frame can be finished as you desire. You can paint it or stain it. I stained mine with a rosewood water based stain followed by a water based polyacrylic clear coat. If you want to take this one step further there is enough of the birch plywood remaining to make a very solid headboard.
