Oregano - an easy homeopathic cure for aches

When it's one of those days where nothing helps your aching head, your sore back, or that stressed out feeling of not sleeping well, you can find a simple cure right on your spice rack. Using Oregano in an easy tea, balm, or bath is the perfect homeopathic remedy for headaches, menstrual cramps, or insomnia.

Oregano was an honored plant used by the Ancient Greeks. They believed planting Oregano near the home would protect against evil forces. Oregano symbolized joy and was often used in recipes for protection, luck, and happiness. Connected with the Goddess Aphrodite, Oregano decorated marriage wreaths and bouquets but it was also an herbal remedy for the painful side of love: letting go. Greeks and Romans often planted it on graves or tombs as a comfort to both the living and the dead. Comforting, protective, and curative, Oregano was used by the Ancients in many forms.

A simple tea brewed with Oregano helps headaches, insomnia, and bad colds. Mix one teaspoon of Oregano with one cup of boiling water. Use a metal tea strainer if you prefer not to have leaves in your drink. Mix in a little cinnamon for a spicier taste; it also has the herbal reputation for helping with colds and aches.

Mixed with a few tablespoons of olive oil, Oregano is the perfect warm pain reliever for aches and cramps. If you have a sunny windowsill, this cure is blissfully uncomplicated. Take a glass jar (think salsa, jam, or mustard) out of your recycling. If it doesn’t have a lid you can use wax paper and a rubber band. Mix in four tablespoons of olive oil and two teaspoons of Oregano. Let it warm up in the sun for a few days. This allows the olive oil to absorb the herb and its medicinal qualities. Warmed up, this Oregano and olive oil balm is the perfect homeopathic pain relief for menstrual cramps. Heat the infused oil for 15 seconds in the microwave. Before showering rub the warm balm on your lower stomach or lower back and let it soak in and soothe. Save the rest to use another day or use it like regular soap for all over relaxation. Shower as normal, the olive oil will rinse clean leaving your skin soft and moisturized.

This cure for aches and cramps can also be prepared as a relaxing bath and works wonders for insomnia. Scatter 2/3 a cup of Oregano and a dash of olive oil into your bathwater. If you prefer not to use loose leaves you can mix 2/3 cup of Oregano with two tablespoons of regular oats (as in old fashioned oatmeal, not instant) into a cheesecloth bag and let it hang under your faucet or float in the bath. The oats make the water slightly milky and soften the skin while the Oregano draws out your stress and aches.

Whether used as a tea, a warm balm, or an herbal bath, Oregano is a simple home remedy found on most spice racks. Honored by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, beloved by the Goddess Aphrodite, and believed to be a symbol of joy, Oregano is a wonderful herb and an important ingredient in homeopathic remedies.
