Scotland's Capital City Awaits

Edinburgh- the capital of Scotland is arguably one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. Visit Edinburgh at any time of year for a vacation and there will be rich treats and delights in store. Visitors will be enchanted and captivated by visiting this beautiful city in winter.

Edinburgh castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline, perched high on the volcanic Castle Rock. A Royal Castle since the 12th century it marks the top of the Royal Mile, a street which forms the centre of the Old Town and leads to Holyrood Place, the Scottish residence of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Marked as an important centre of the Enlightenment, Edinburgh has a rich cultural heritage and was home to many great thinkers, engineers, scientists and economists. The landscape is rugged and stunning, a product of pre historic volcanic activity.

The old town centered around the Royal Mile has many buildings 300 years old or more, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is a magical labyrinth of passageways or "closes" which often lead into surprisingly light formal courtyards. An ideal place to take a walking tour especially after dark as Edinburgh has many supernatural delights to explore. Ghosthunting in Edinburgh is not for the feint hearted.

Edinburgh New Town

The so -called New Town is a short hop across Princes Street Gardens, building started in 1750, is also UNESCO World Heritage site and considered my many to be one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in existence.

Edinburgh city centre is compact, and most places of interest are within easy walking distance, although a regular bus network covers the city. Average temperatures in Edinburgh in winter are around 2-3 degrees, with occasional snow or rain.

Things to Do and See

Edinburgh Castle is a must for all visitors, views from the ramparts across the whole of the city are spectacular and not to be missed during a winter Edinburh vacation. Holyrood palace is also open to visitors.Edinburgh has many Museums and large galleries to visit, and is suprisingly only a few miles from the sea where the Royal Yacht Britannia has permanent mooring just North of the city centre. The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre on the Royal Mile is a warming place to stop! Both the old and new town are teeming with a wide variety of cafes pubs and restaurants. Whether you need a coffee or dinner at a five star restaurant you will be spoiled for choice. A firm favourite for fine dining is the Witchery restaurant, which at the top of the Royal mile rubs shoulders with Edinburgh Castle.

You will find a very warm welcome awaits you in Edinburgh.
