FAQ for Fire Emblem: Awakening

Introduction

This hub is going to list a variety of questions I've noticed people asking about Fire Emblem: Awakening, as well as their answers. Feel free to ask any questions you may have related to this game and that I currently do not have listed in this hub. After all, this hub is for the greater community of Fire Emblem, and I don't know ALL of the questions you may have.

Well then, let's get going!

Q: What Is The Best Class Of Fire Emblem: Awakening?

A: If only it were that easy. See, each unit has their own strengths and weaknesses, much like your My Unit does. In a general matter of speaking, a unit's best class is the one where he/she can best exploit their growth rates. In some cases, this is not necessarily the class that unit started out as.

For an early game example, take a good look at Kellam. Everyone keeps throwing out in-game references that he is hard to see/hear and that no one seems to notice him. This is a clever nudge by the game to use a Second Seal on him and class change him to a Thief. Don't believe me? He gets 60% Defense growth and 35% Resistance Growth as a Thief! He solves one of the worst problems of being a Thief (low durability) while not sacrificing a whole lot in the trade-off.

Q: How many My Units can I have in Fire Emblem: Awakening?

A: Well, you can have the one you create at the start of the game. Additionally, you can use StreetPass to find other players and battle their teams led by their My Unit (the AI controls the enemy team). If you win, you can recruit their My Unit for use in your own army.

Or, you could just Recruit their army's leader by paying them a certain amount of gold.

Q: Who's the best Unit in Fire Emblem: Awakening?

A: Well, I'm inclined to say Donnel, at least for a large part of the storyline. Once you beat the game proper and enter the post-game, then this question becomes a whole lot trickier. In that case, the best Units are those who have bonuses to their Maximum Speed and penalties to stats they could care less about (Magic on non-casters, or Strength on casters for two examples).

Just don't get carried away, because even the best unit in the entire game is still just one unit. Armies live and die by their weakest members!

Q: Do you get a second chance to recruit Units?

A: Depends on what you mean. If you're talking about downloadable content, then yes. You get a chance to recruit a unit from a downloadable chapter when you complete the chapter. If it is a downloadable team, then you can recruit the team's leader with gold or beat their team in battle (getting the team leader for free if you succeed).

For Units in the main storyline and any paralogue chapters, the answer, to the best of my knowledge, is no. So, make sure you recruit the units when you get the chance!

Q: How can I use a Master Seal/Second Seal on a Unit?

A: First of all, the unit in question needs to be at least Level 10. Secondly, Special Classes (Manaketes, Dancers, Taguels, Villagers) cannot promote. Special Classes can class change by using a Second Seal (no, I didn't actually expect the game would allow you to class change Manaketes, Dancers and Taguels, why do you ask?).

If you have an applicable unit, do the following:

  • Place a Master Seal/Second Seal in the unit's inventory.
  • Use the Master Seal/Second Seal from that unit's inventory.
  • Choose the class you would like to promote/class change to.
  • Profit!

Note: This method of item usage applies to other things like Vulneraries, stat Tonics, and permanent stat boosters as well. In other words, on a compatible unit, using a Seal is as easy as using any other item.

Q: What's the level cap in Fire Emblem: Awakening?

A: Twenty (20) for units that can promote and promoted units. Thirty (30) for Special Classes (Manaketes, Dancers, Taguels and Villagers).

So, said another way, normal classes can level up 39 times, and special classes can level up 29 times.

Q: When Should I Promote A Unit?

A: Well, I'm going to list a few exceptions below. However, the general rule is: Once that unit has reached Level 20.

Exceptions:

  • If your unit has reached several caps before Level 20 and the remaining stats have low growths. You may consider a premature promotion in this case.
  • Donnel is weird in that he doesn't promote as a villager. You have to use a Second Seal to class change him to a Fighter or Mercenary. However, once you do class change, you'll notice that he will brush up to his caps really fast, thanks to his obscene growths. Hence, the first bullet applies with him as well.

Q: How Do I Unlock [insert Paralogue Chapter Number here]?

A: Well, here's a list of how to unlock each individual Paralogue Chapter:

  • 1: Chapter 3 completed.
  • 2: Chapter 5 completed.
  • 3: Chapter 7 completed.
  • 4: Chapter 9 completed.

Chapters 5 through 16 involve children characters. Thus, to unlock all of those paralogues, your female units (and your My Unit, even if male) need to have married. If you're missing a Paralogue, it's probably because you still have unwed relevant units.

Lastly, Paralogue 17 is unlocked after completing Chapter 18.

Q: But, what's the list of eligible female units for unlocking Paralogues? *spoilers*

A: Well, this answer is a minor spoiler for unit names, so please skip it if you haven't beaten Chapter 11 yet. If you HAVE beaten Chapter 11, well:

To unlock all relevant child unit Paralogues, the following units must be married:

  • Lissa
  • Olivia
  • Maribelle
  • Sully
  • Sumia
  • Cordelia
  • Cherche
  • My Unit (even if male; making him, if applicable, the only exception to the unlock rule of females)
  • Panne
  • Miriel
  • Tharja
  • Nowi

Q: Can units remarry in Fire Emblem: Awakening?

A: To the best of my knowledge, no. In other words, the concept of divorce does not exist in Fire Emblem: Awakening, so make sure your units are in it for the long haul!

Q: Are the children units any good?

A: Well, they start at Level 10 unpromoted. For example, Lucina starts as a Level 10 Lord. That means you have to baby them a bit to get them up to speed. However, I would definitely say that they are pretty good. At the end of the day, it depends on the parents of each particular child, as there are skill inheritance details to consider. Let's just say that Donnel's child would be quite nasty, and leave it at that.

Q: Can a child unit be a Villager?

A: Amusingly, the answer is yes, for a function of yes. See, children inherit the class selections of their parents. So, if Donnel is one of your parents, then it follows that the child can be a Villager. I don't think that any child units are Villagers by default, so you'll have to use a Second Seal to get the desired class. Of course, if you already have Aptitude on the child (Donnel passes down Aptitude to his child), then the real question is: Why would you want your child unit to be a Villager?

Q: Is there any way to grind in Fire Emblem: Awakening?

A: Yes. Too many ways, according to the hardcore Fire Emblem community. To add insult to injury, you can both grind for gold and experience. Let's see:

  • Get at least one downloadable content (DLC) map and replay it over and over again. DLC maps are repeatable.
  • If you don't want to pay money, you can use Spotpass to download unit teams from other Fire Emblem games. These DLC teams are also repeatable.
  • After beating a chapter, a random number of Risen teams may spawn around the world map. You can engage them for extra experience and (usually) gold (in the form of Small Bullions that can be sold for 1000G).
  • A classic method involves reinforcement abuse. On some maps, forts will spawn reinforcements on certain turns. Keep some of your lagging units close to the reinforcements (but not TOO close) and have them grind out some extra experience until the reinforcements dry up.
  • Another classic method involves boss abuse. Some bosses are stationed on top of a healing tile, such as a throne or a gate. Just have your higher Defense (or Resistance if the boss uses a tome) units bear the brunt of the assault until the boss' weapon of choice breaks. Then, you just have your weaker units attack the unarmed boss repeatedly until you faint from boredom or decide to end the poor boss' life.
  • A corollary of the above occurs by substituting a boss with a healer and an unarmed regular enemy. Just keep attacking the unarmed enemy and have the healer keep using their staff until the staff breaks. Then you finish the both of them for that last little bit of experience.
  • In Casual Mode, you can just throw the entirety of your army against enemy forces with only the barest amount of strategy. You might lose units, but they respawn anyway. As long as they're not underleveled to begin with, you'll barely feel it in the long run. Just remember that losing Chrom or your My Unit is a Game Over even on Casual.

Q: How do I download extra maps?

A: First of all, you need to have unlocked the Outrealm Gate (beat Chapter 4 if you haven't already). Afterwards, go to the Outrealm Gate's location on the World Map and press A. You will be taken to a new screen that gives you two options. The first one allows you to play downloaded maps, and the second one allows you to purchase extra maps.

Until March 5th, 2013, the first DLC map is completely free. Additionally, as time passes, new maps may be sold at discount or free, so be sure to check on occasion if you don't want to spend money on DLC maps!

Q: Can I start a new game once I have completed the storyline?

A: Yes, but it's probably not in the way you expect. There are one or two things that are tied to the 3DS Game Card as a whole rather to a single save file, such as the Avatar Database, which means that you can carry over your My Unit from a previous run to your current run. However, like all special units, your My Unit transferred in this way cannot support. This is done to prevent shenanigans with an overpowered unit that doesn't fall off like Frederick. Besides, the game forces you to create a new My Unit for your new game. Even so, you can have quite the ridiculous My Unit if you keep importing the unit data from game to game.

Summary: You can transfer your My Unit, but it will be a separate entity from the My Unit the game forces you to create to start off the game.

Anyway, to close this answer off, there is nothing stopping you from running up to three separate runs on the same Game Card. However, there is no New Game + option or equivalent in Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Conclusion

Well, that's about it from me for now. As mentioned in the Introduction, please ask any questions you may have that are not already answered in this hub. I'll try to update this from time to time to get any obvious questions I may have missed, but this hub is for all of you Fire Emblem players (new and old, but mostly the new since the old probably have more game experience than I do!).

Until the next time, take care and have fun! ;)
