Spain Scores Dramatic Goal In Extra Time To Win World Cup
On July 11 in Johanesburg, South Africa, In the 116th minute of the FIFA World Cup Finals, Andres Iniesta broke free inside the penalty area, taking a pass from Cesc Fabregas and then he put the ball (a right-footed shot from 8 yards) just past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg. As for the Dutch, this lose marks the third time the Netherlands has gone home as a runner-up.
The Path to the World Cup Finals
Almost one month with 62 matches played and more than enough vuvuzela bleats later, the 2010 Soccer World Cup came down to two title contenders. On Sunday July 11, Spain and the Netherlands met at Soccer City for the FIFA championship.
On July 6, 2010 Netherlands defeated Uruguay in a 3-2 match that sent the only non-European semifinalist home and sent Holland to their first World Cup title match since 1978.
On July 7, 2010 Spain advanced to World Cup final with 1-0 win over Germany.
The hopes and dreams of a continent were put out when Ghana lost to Uruguay on July 2, 2010 in the WC soccer quarter final matches. And Latin America’s may have thought that they had a standing supremacy in the matches at FIFA World Cup, with 4 of the 8 teams being Latin winning a spot in the quarter finals. Yet it is Europe teams that have been striking back throughout this entire tournament and it is one of the teams from Europe, Spain v Holland that will be taking home the World Cup.
Will it be the Netherlands who beat Brazil (quarter finals) and then defeated Uruguay (semi finals) or will it be the Spain, the winner of the semi final game against Germany ( who trounced on Argentina in the semi final match) and (who defeated Paraguay in the quarter final game ?
One thing is sure the World Cup will have a brand new champion no matter which team wins Sunday’s final in Johannesburg.

85,000 fans at Soccer City in Johannesburg and millions of television viewers around the world watched on as the FIFA Games came to an end. And though it took Spain extra time to win this game when finally a goal by Andrés Iniesta in the 26th minute of extra time, the team from Spain defeated the Netherlands, 1-0. With this win the Red Fury became the eighth country to win the World Cup. This win is the first World Cup Championship for Spain and it also makes Spain the first team to lose their opening match at a World Cup and still win the tournament.
The goal came while Holland had only 10 men on the field, and this is because defender John Heitinga was sent off in the 109th minute with his second yellow card, one of nine Dutch yellows in the match. Football's ruling body FIFA first introduced red and yellow cards in 1970.
The best player of the Tournament has to be David Villa. He finished the tournament with five of Spain's eight goals and his goals always came at pivotal times in the games.

Sergio Ramos plays the way all outside backs should play, with a full tilt, forward and back. He's committed 13 fouls this tournament and sustained 11, usually while charging forward with the ball. So many of Spain's attacks start with Sergio Ramos, who is as good a dribbler as any forward in the game. He has the most solo attacking runs of any player in this tournament. When he gets forward, it puts the entire opposition on its heels.

"You felt that the team that would score first would win," Holland Coach Bert Van Marwijk said. "We had two great chances through Arjen. We made a real game out of it."
Giovanni van Bronckhorst's career ends in the 105th minute of the World Cup final, the left back being subbed-off by coach Bert van Marwijk. Bayern Munich's Edson Braafheid replaced the captain, who will retire from soccer after today's match.
The Netherlands now has more victories in World Cup games without a title than any nation: 19. Spain held that dubious record with 24.
Several Dutch players wiped away tears as they received their runners-up medals — yet again. They had won every qualifying match and all six previous games in South Africa before the bitter ending.
"We have to be very proud of the team They had us in rapture for a month. We enjoyed their play, even the final. They had good chances, it's a shame. They will get the tribute next Tuesday that they deserve (in Amsterdam), and we will all see that it is also quite special to have come second in South Africa." - Dutch crown prince Willem-Alexander

Holland Beats Uruguay 3-2 to Reach the Final
Despite being hit by injuries and suspensions, the underdogs from Uruguay gave Holland a real test and they never gave up. Maybe if they had Luis Suarez who was suspended following the handball intervention that saved his team in the dying moments of the quarterfinal against Ghana.
Oscar Tabarez the coach of Uruguay praised his players after the semi final match in Capetown, South Africa when he was quoted as saying "Today we are looking at the team that is in the final and I believe we put this team in difficulty. I know football in Uruguay and where it stands on a worldwide level. He also said that the narrow FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat to the Netherlands proved they could can mix it with football's powerhouses.
You cant help but think "what if" after this loss, for what if Uruguay had been at full strength, with their main strike man Luis Suarez and their captain Diego Lugano? What if Holland's second goal had been ruled offside?
Right now Uraguay has alot to proud of
Uruguay president Jose Mujica expressed how proud he was of the national team despite this semi-final defeat and was quoted as saying " Uruguay played with great dignity. It was a beautiful game. Five minutes more and we might have drawn,"

Germanys lineup in the semi final against Spain are Neuer in goal, then Friedrich, Lahm, Mertesacker and Boateng as defenders, then a midfield of Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Ozil and Trochowski, with Podolski and Klose up front wreaking fear.
In the semi final match Germany backed off and allowed Spain to dictate the tempo, find their rhythm, and ultimately, win the match. By letting Spain control the pace, Germany
effectively tried to beat them at their own game, which is a slow,
pass based style that emphasizes technique above all other factors. Was it courage, confidence or both that lost the game for Germany? One thing they have going for them is they are a young team. But if they want to be the best they are going to have to learn to respect their own potential.
