Socks and Sandals Are a No-No

Socks and sandals look bad on anyone, but women seem to know this innately and rarely pair them. Therefore, I'm only addressing this advice to my male readers. Cos, well, women just know better.

To begin with, I hate seeing sandals on men, whether they're sporting socks or not. Don't ask me why, I don't have a good answer for you. It's just one of those things. Still, that would be light years better than seeing socks and sandals on a man.

First of all, what's the point?

Aren't you wearing sandals because your feet are hot? Isn't it summer, and you just want to keep cool somehow? So why are you wearing socks? Do you really think it's way cooler than wearing a normal pair of shoes?

Ok, maybe a little - but not enough to warrant this eyesore.

I think most of you actually do it because you think it looks good. Or at least normal. Let me tell you, this look is about as sexy as a pocket protector and horn-rimmed glasses. Unless you're a 10th grade algebra teacher, this look is inappropriate.

How inappropriate is it?

Well, let's just say I once issued someone an ultimatum. He was a stockbroker with incredibly sexy suits. I have never dated anyone with such style, let me tell you. He asked me out and we had plans to meet for dinner. He arrived at my house in a bizarre, ranger-brown ensemble, topped off with... Teva sandals and white socks.

I refused to leave my house until he promised we would first go past his place so he could put some real shoes on. He did. Cos I was not kidding. He would have been talking to the hand, otherwise.

Yes, y'all, it's that big of a no-no!

But hey, I realize some of you are going to do it anyway. The least you can do is minimize the horror - here are some tips to help you save your piggies some embarrassment.

  • Kneehighs and sandals look silly. Are you kidding me?! This didn't even look good in the 70's! You're scaring me, please strip immediately.
  • Neon colored socks aren't much better. Ok, you get points if your socks match your shirt, but do I really need to explain the bigger picture here?
  • Non-matching socks are even worse! Rainbow Bright called, she wants her socks back. White socks are bad enough, do you really need to do this to your poor feet?

Please, be a friend and intervene when your mates fall into sandal-and-sock mode. That goes for women, as well, this looks bad on everyone!

xx Isabella

Some of us are stuck wearing sandals like birkenstocks for feet problems... and then when we get out of the heat and into the office our feet start to freeze... what do you want from us? I'm not going to go through pain or cold for fashion.. sorry.

If I had the option I wouldn't do it... but I don't. :(

I completely agree, sandals alone look hideous. I've always been a socks and sneakers guy and hardly wear open shoes though I don't mind thongs. But sandals alone and then socks with them...urghhh. I saw my other layed back friend wearing them the other day and asked him why he could just wear shoes like I was. He said I was acting gay for caring about how I looked. Well yeah we'll see how many chicks he picks up with his new look.

I think this topic is debatable. I think that a lot of people get riled up about socks and sandals because they hear everyone else saying it. Making remarks about socks and sandals brings attention and noteriety to the remarker and therefore encourages people to want to remark first. I think it's ok if you want to keep the sun off your feet but cool at the same time or if you just want to keep them at a comfortable temperature period.

Those of us whose feet sweat a little more might feel the need to wear sandals to alleviate this, and find that they still sweat a bit and hence chafe without socks as a protective intermediary layer.

Fashion is so ridiculously subjective as to make its judgments worthless anyway.

I have a question then about this attire. I have posed this question before to people and have been unable to get an answer. I wear buddhist robes, and something similar to yoga gear. When I go to temple you take your shoes off. It is convienant to wear sandles or slip off shoes and more polite to wear socks. I have been told this doesn't look bad and is more of a fashion null statement (since there are not shorts/cut-offs involved). How fashion insensitive am I being here?

if you like your feet to sweat - wear closed shoes all day.

if you like your soles to sweat - wear sandals w/o socks all day.

any sandals with any socks = automatically ugly? your taste is too simple.

Since when is it considered a "fashion" or even acceptable to walk around with your feet sticking out?

It is not. It is totally rude.

WRONG!!! We (us guys) wear S&S because it's comfortable. Nothing more, nothing less.

Up until recently, I never wore S&S in public. However, I broke my right baby toe a few weeks ago and regular shoes are very uncomfortable to wear. It's mid October and the weather is getting colder. So... I am wearing S&S. :P

It's great! The soles of my feet are protected, my feet are warm from the socks and my toes are free to do as they wish... Ahhhhh!!! Comfort! :P

We (us guys) would like to see our women in a thong 24/7. However, you (girls) say that 'briefs' are more comfortable than a thong. Should I give my wife 'the hand' because she is wearing 'Granny' briefs and not a sexy thong???

Another issue that has baffled me for years is why women insist on having 5 inch heels on every pair of foot wear that they own. What gives here? Are you that insecure about your height that you have to wear heels for everything you do? Can't you just accept your height for what it is?

Annnnndddd.... Another thing that I don't understand is why a woman would wear a very low cut top with her 'girls' busting (no pun intended...) out, on display to the entire world and then turn around and say "Heeeellllloooo, I'm up here!!!" I mean C'mon... you put your girls on display and then expect nobody to be able to enjoy the goods. Sheesh... What up wid dat?

Anyways... why should we (us guys) care about what you, female 'fashion snobs', think? What guy would want 'you' anyways if you are that shallow to snub a guy that wears S&S?

Should I tell 'my' date to go home and wipe off that bright red lipstick as it makes her look like a cheap tramp???

To each his/her own... :P
