Five Cartoons I Don't Let My Children Watch

I love cartoons I have been watching them since I was a child.  There are some really good cartoon shows that are out there today.  There are also some shows that I feel are not really good for kids.  I have chosen five shows that I will not let my kids watch.  Four of the shows are actually made for children and the last one is an adult cartoon.  There are several reasons why I do not like these shows and will not let my children watch even though these are kids’ cartoons.

  1. Ed Edd n Eddy – Ed, Edd n Eddy is a show about three young friends who continuously try to scam money off of their friends to get candy.  Ed, Edd and Eddy’s schemes never work but are the plot of each and every show.  This cartoon is annoying to me because it is a group of boys that are always getting into predicaments while trying to scam other kids.  Even though their scams never work this cartoon just seems really pointless to me and sends a strange message to children.
  2. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy – The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is a show about two kids Billy and Mandy making the Grim Reaper their friend for eternity. This cartoon can be really disgusting, disturbing and over the top especially for a kids cartoon.  There are so many things wrong with this cartoon its hard to limit it to just one reason.
  3. Chowder – Chowder is a show about a young boy named Chowder who assists a chef. Although this show has some potential the characters can be really annoying and obnoxious.  Sometimes the show does not seem to have a point at all and there are some disgusting parts on this show as well. There are so many other cartoons out there that are better than this cartoon show.
  4. The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack - The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack is a show about a young boy named Flapjack who is being raised by a whale.  The whale Bubbie and Flapjack rescue Captain K’nuckles a pirate who tells the two about CandiedIsland; which is an island made of candy.  The show is about their crazy misadventures in pursuit of CandiedIsland.  This cartoon can be disgusting and Flapjack and the pirate are pretty obnoxious.  Some of the story lines are not really kid-friendly even though the focus is on getting candy.
  5. Family Guy – Family Guy is an adult cartoon show about the Griffin family. The family consists of the parents Peter and Lois, their children Chris, Meg and Stewie and their dog Brian.  This show has a great deal of adult humor and although I love this show it is not kid-friendly at all.  My children try and watch it because they find it funny but I will make them wait a few years for that.

As a parent I may seem like I am a little overbearing not letting my children watch some cartoons, but there are so many other cartoons that my children can choose from.  There are other cartoons that annoy me that I still let my kids watch because they are not so bad just irritating to me.  When a new cartoon comes out I usually try and watch a few episodes of the cartoon with my kids and then decide whether or not they can continue to watch them or not.

What is happening to us? These are for kids? Glad i don't have any young ones now-- my son and his wife are very careful about the limited amount of TV my grandkids watch. Sometimes the box is not on for days at a time.

Rochelle - Your son has the right idea. My kids do not watch a lot of tv because of our schedule but I do like to monitor what they watch. Lately one of my daughters has taken up watching the History Channel which I think is great.

Great hub, and good to know there are actually parents out there that do their job. My kids can't watch Family Guy, South Park, Simpsons, and they are always complaining about how the other kids are allowed. One day they'll understand...

I totally agree with you. I have an autistic 20-year-old, mentally 7 years old. His hormones are raging. He collects everything Disney in video and DVDs. But I forbid him to own "Who Killed Rodger Rabbit." Jessica Rabbit was just too much woman for him to handle. That is DEFINITELY NOT a children's cartoon. Trying watching it again and you'll see a lot of adult jokes and snide comments, that the kids don't even notice . But they're for adults. No way. He knows he's forbidden to watch this.

Triplet Mom profile image

I would definitely consider this a very valid list. I usually watch cartoons with my kids when they watch them or at least see a few episodes of each show they watch. I would add Total Drama Island to your list. I don't let my kids watch that or Family Guy and Simpsons. I never took anything on TV too seriously. I really just consider it entertainment. But, it is great when some shows actually do teach values. My wife would agree with your choices more than me. I always watched these show not counting Family Guy with them and was never concerned. My wife eventually decided they shouldn't watch Ed Edd and Eddy. I wish more of the old Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse and Hannah Barbera cartoons would be on. But, that just isn't the case anymore. I hate that I'm now stuck with Comcast and without Boomerang.

Only problem with family channel cartoons is that now if I'm not careful, we are late for school - due to my sitting and watching the darn things with him LOL

the fck is this sh!t? I felt the humorous part of my brain slowly decay every word I read when I gradually realized that you're SERIOUS. Your children will grow up to be fags or whores, depending on which sex they are. I say this with certainty, because if you are anally raping them over CARTOONS that they watch, you must make sure that your umbilical cord is attached to them every second of their life.

Enjoy your kids childhoods; your kids definitely won't. :)

Thanks for your concern but my children are perfectly fine, healthy and happy.

Since you say no to Family Guy, just out of curiousity, what's your in take on it's competitors like Simpsons or American Dad? I agree with you though about Family Guy, it's clearly meant for adults and it's even marketed to adults.

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

Christigmc - For cartoons its all relative to age. I do not let my kids watch Family Guy or American Dad because they are truly meant for adults. I also don't let them watch The Simpsons, although they have seen a few episodes with their dad. Although I enjoy The Simpsons some of their topics are a little mature for the younger audiences but again it depends on the age of the children.

emievil profile image

emievil  says:

I agree with what you wrote here. Just because these are cartoons doesn't mean they are good for kids. Parents should also see their theme and the topics they show and allow or disallow accordingly. Not watching these cartoons will not be to the detriment of your kids, because when they grow up they will have all the chance to see these. And then they'll know why you did not allow them to watch when they were young, and they'll thank you for it. =)

Francine Smith  says:

Well I hope you let your three babies watch the wholesome American Dad? Family Guy is just bad. Was Lois mentally ill when she married Peter Griffin? And Stewie Griffin, what's with that little psychopath?

Actually Triplet, it's the ELDERLY that have real issues with cartoons. I once made the mistake of sitting my father-in-law in front of the Cartoon Network; because we don't have the Playboy Channel which he watches for the "interesting documentaries on cars".

He got to see just five minutes of South Park... and it took him FIVE WHOLE CHRISTMASES for him to shut up about the kind of "derranged and vile" TV that I watch. Oh my god, I would have killed him like Kenny, if it wasn't for the cardiac attack he got watching an 'interesting' documentary about Canadian pole dancers on HBO.

That's all folks!

I am not so sure the kids "get" some of the inuendo. I used to watch Rocky and Bullwinkle when I was little. Then it was all about Bullwinkle talking funny and getting big lumps on his head. When I watched it later in life there were tons of double entendre scenes which flew right over my little pig-tailed head when I was small but as an older person I gained a whole new appreciation for and laughed just as hard.(for different reasons of course)

I would not give the kiddies too much credit for being able to understand everything being presented in cartoons.

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

emievil - I agree completely parents need to see the cartoons and understand what is going on. I can admit that I figured all cartoons were basically the same before I had children. Kids will be able to see the cartoons when they are older and more able to handle the content.

Pageantgirl - Great idea, DVD's are a great alternative.

Vizey - Thank you. Yes monitoring the sites that your children go to is just as important as the shows that they watch.

LandthatIlove - Its not so much the inuendo that I am concerned with as it is the content. Some of the cartoons are just violent and shocking. It is a big adjustment from the cartoons that I grew up with. I would also disagree some children do understand what is being presented in cartoons.

Francine - Interesting take. I am not sure about the elderly but I do know that there are some cartoons that I cannot stand. But I am old enough to change the channel to something that I like. No American Dad for my kids.

Ed Edd n Eddy is a terrible cartoon for kids. I think the others are fine expect Family guy is not for kids. I do not see any harm in letting kids watch the other esp Ed Edd n Eddy, just point it out clearly how stupid and unrealistic that stunt is. Say something like that is so fake and will never work in real life. You might end up debating thou. lol:-)

Triplet Mom profile image

Nambahu - Great advice I think that parents should talk to their children about what they see on television no matter what the show is. Discussion is a great way to help children to learn.

No idea what the top 4 cartoons are, but if they are anything like the 5th one, Family Guy, then I would say you are spot on in not letting your kids watch them. That is probably the worst cartoon in primetime.

netslums profile image

netslums  says:

I don't think it matters which cartoons you don't let your kids watch. Take it from a 19 year-old; anytime mom and dad say "Dont watch this", guess what I am doing in about thirty minutes after? I'm watching it. I remember South Park was banned in my house, yet my brother and I still managed to watch every new episode without my parents ever knowing. Now, I'm not saying to give up on your children, I'm simply saying "where there's a will, there's a way". Those first 4 cartoons are just plain "creepy" even for an adult to watch. Family Guy however is not that bad. Contrary to what most people will say, Family Guy does tend to have a moral to each episode (most of the time). The language is the only thing that might be innapropriate for children. Great hub though, I love the idea. Keep up the good work, and check in on my hubs for movie reviews. You may also request a movie review from me and I will respond back as quickly as possible.

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

Bridanp - Thank you. I agree FG is not a cartoon for kids it is truly an adult cartoon.

netslums - I actually watch Family Guy myself it is after all an adult cartoon and I like it. Its just not for my children. I agree that where there is a will there is a way. However my children are unable to sneak television so that probably won't happen for several years and by that time there will probably be something even worse on lol.

It is not just cartoons that you have to watch out for. Many of the shows on Disney aimed at tweens are terrible. The kids on them are rude and demanding and do not get in trouble for it. This makes your kids feel like they can act this way.

Tasha  says:

I don't think Family Guy was a cartoon ever directed towards children. Now the Cartoon Network shows are different but all kids cartoons suck now days anyway. Just get some old Looney Toons and you'll be okay. They're more entertaining anyway. I love adult cartoons, myself, and that's what I intend on making a career out of..but Family Guy is stale and just uses shock value to entertain and is uncomparable to the greats like South Park and the Simpsons. But I guess that's besides the point. The Disney Channel is worse than Cartoon Network, I think. At least the cartoons aren't exploiting child actors and actresses. *cough* Hannah Montana.

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

Artemus - I do agree that some of the behaviors of the children and even the adults in some shows are obnoxious just to get a point across. But you cannot keep your children from watching everything. Limiting television is always the best.

Tasha - I agree completely and even though those cartoons aren't geared towards children, many children still watch them. Thanks for your response and insight.

PAXTON  says:

You sound like a real bitch for a mom

If I was told what I couldn't watch while it was on a children based programming channel. I would have ended up being a massive pussy who wasn't ready for whats out there in the real world whats next telling them that 9/11 was an accident people like you make me sick.

Get over your shitty christian morals

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

Paxton - Thanks for you comments although your perspective is far from the truth. I can see how you could make these assumptions though just from the tone of your response. Watching cartoons and 9/11 have nothing in common so I really do not understand your rationale there. By the way even the children based programming channels have ratings and are not meant for children of all ages. They have ratings for a reason.

RomerianReptile profile image

I agree with others. Those first four are terrible! I like Family Guy myself, and the Simpsons, Futurama, etc, but it's different because I'm in my mid twenties. I think you're right to keep your young children from watching it, when a child is an older teenager, I think it's not an issue.

I don't even think of Family Guy as a children's cartoon... it doesn't come on in a time that is ideal for children to watch, but maybe I live in the past by thinking children don't stay up as late anymore... lol?

RR - I enjoy those cartoons too when I get a chance to watch them and I agree when kids are older they should be able to watch them. I am talking about young children. Well actually in my area they show Family Guy earlier and I know that there are several children in my kids' classes that are able to watch the show. Thanks for your comments.

Informed  says:

Censorship is a load of shit. I hate when overbearing mothers can't get it through their pea-brained noggins that censorship is not a substitute for good parenting. Kids are stupid, but they're equipped right upon exit of the womb with the ability to learn, distinguish between socially acceptable behavior and the behavior that will get them 5 across the eyes; as well as the ability to form their own opinion.

Personally, I don't think kids should be protected from anything. They just need good advice from experienced adults.

DO YOUR FUCKING JOB, PARENTS!

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

Informed - What you are describing is not censorship but parenting. Parenting does not mean sitting your child in front of the television and letting them watch everything that is on. Not all television programming is meant for everybody that is why there are ratings. Not letting my children watch certain shows does not mean that I am censoring them nor does it mean that I do not give advice in fact that is far from the actual truth. Thanks for your comments.
