Formal Skirts For Men

Updated on October 18, 2009

When it comes to formal attire, men get the short fashion stick in abundance. The only truly acceptable formal attire for men is a penguin style tuxedo. The most we trust men with fashion choices in the formal world is allowing them to occasionally don a coat with a Chinese collar, or picking between a blue or red cummerbund.

Women, on the other hand, are allowed to dress in an array of finery so diverse that we devote actual reporters and entire publications to the subject. When celebrities step onto the red carpet for any big occasion, women are photographed mercilessly and categorized into 'worst' and 'best dressed', whilst men are allowed to stroll by with a smile, nobody even thinking to ask them who they are wearing. They're wearing the appropriate male uniform, and that should be enough.

If you spend five minutes thinking about, it, it's actually not far off madness. We've become so used to it that we barely give it a second thought, but imagine for a moment if every woman was expected to turn up in a little black dress. That's it. If every woman simply wore a little black dress to every formal occasion, people would wonder what had gone wrong. There would be an outcry. Entire industries could collapse overnight.

I believe that men deserve the same access to finery as women. They are no less beautiful creatures and they are no less deserving of a wide range of clothing in which to express their style. We've come to accept that men's sense of style comes down to their shirt, cuff links and tie, and it is an utterly ridiculous concept at the best of times.

Fortunately, skirts can look just as good on men as they do on women, especially long, flowing formal style skirts. I would only advise that perhaps men wishing to exude a masculine air about themselves stay away from the hip-hugging designs which will create a feminine look of curves. On the other hand, if a feminine look is what the man desires, then choose hip hugging designs which then flare out at the knees. There are skirts capable of making the emaciated frames of Hollywood's finest women look curvaceous, and they will work just as well on men as they do women. The skirt pictured at the top of this article would be perfect in this regard and is available from Fairy Goth Mother.

Other skirts pictured in this article are a vintage taffatea skirt, which would create lovely dramatic lines when worn by a man, and Tadashi skirt, which comes with the matching top, which guys, you'll be pleased to know that you can actually buy separately, thus getting the perfect fit.
