Fun Exercise- Is it Possible to Have Fun While Exercising?

Updated on October 24, 2011

Do you associate the “F word” with exercise? By F Word I mean F-U-N, of course. For me, getting up at 5:30 am and dragging myself out to the treadmill for an hour, three days a week is not my idea of F-U-N. However, I continue to do it as the health benefits outweigh the punishment.

I know somewhere out there; someone is exercising and having fun doing it. I wanted to know just what some of my online acquaintances considered fun forms of exercise and so I asked them, “What form of F-U-N exercise gives you the most benefit?”

The first response I received recommended that I “tilt the treadmill more.” -Not my idea of adding fun to exercise, but okay, noted. Here are the other suggestions that I received for types of fun exercise:

Tae Bo–Tae Bo is a program that combines the best of a variety of different exercise disciplines to provide an overall workout. Tae Bo is the combination of martial arts, boxing, and dance. Tae Bo is recommended as a challenging and fun exercise/workout and Billy Blank is a great motivator. It is suggested that the more you do it, the more you will love it!

Pole Dancing –Pole Dancing comes recommended as an “absolute blast” and a terrific way to get fit. Pole dancing is a combination of dancing and gymnastics. For this type of exercise, you dance sensually with the same type of vertical poles that are used in strip clubs. Pole dancers perform climbs, spins, and body inversions. If classes are not available locally, there are plenty of online videos and DVDs for instruction. You may find yourself buying your own pole for your home. My friend professed that she became pregnant after one week of owning her pole. Now that’s fun exercise!

Zumba-Zumba is an aerobic fitness program that combines body sculpting movements with dance steps derived from Cumbia, Merengue, Salsa, Reggaeton, Hip Hop, Mambo, Rumba and so on. The routines feature aerobic interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms. Zumba targets areas like the glutes, legs, arms, abdominals, and the heart. The workout is described as “fun and uplifting” and “the hour will fly by.”

Playing Tag- Get outside and play tag with the kids. No kidding! Getting outside with the kids and playing a game, going for a bike ride, or playing soccer are great recommendations for fun exercises that came from other moms. With only two kids, playing tag may mean a lot of running for me, but kids will love it. Actually this type of “interval” exercise, running at maximum output and them stopping is effective at burning fat. My kids may wonder what happened to their “real” mom, as I suggest we try all 18 different games of tag that I found online.

Yoga-Yoga is a healing practice that is a combination of breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditation. Two people suggested yoga as their type of fun exercise that they love because it lengthens and strengthens. I have tried Yoga and while certainly a beneficial type of exercise, I don’t equate it with fun. Since two friends recommended it, Yoga made the list.

Walking-Walking at a moderate pace for 30-60 minutes burns stored fat and can build muscle to speed up your metabolism. Walking an hour a day is also associated with cutting your risk of diseases like heart disease, breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes and stroke. To quote my friend, “walking is just the best.” I agree and I’ve added three days of walking to my three days of using the treadmill. Walking is an especially fun exercise for me because I walk with my sister. We talk, gossip, laugh and have never been closer. We forget all about the “exercise” part – now that’s F-U-N!
