I have always had issues with puffy under-eyes in the morning, even when I was a kid. As a child I didn't worry about it, obviously, but as I grew older it started to get on my nerves. Puffy eyes can manifest differently in different people, and in my case I always woke up looking like someone had socked me while I was sleeping. Not sexy, I assure you.

I tried everything.

I spent my 20's researching the causes and trying to find the magic product that would make me gorgeous within a few minutes of waking up. You can probably guess how successful I was. I tried creams specially formulated to soothe tired, puffy eyes. I tried gels designed to smooth tired, puffy eyes. I tried fruits, vegetables, vitamins, minerals, more sleep, less sleep, elevated-pillow sleep, eye-drops, allergy medications, increased water intake, decreased salt intake. Even if you don't see it mentioned here, I tried it.

I finally gave up.

By 30, I'd given up and just had to make a point of getting up way in advance of when I'd need to apply makeup -- cos makeup and puffy skin don't go together. And I'm not even talking about foundation, I'm just talking about regular concealer, for God's sake. Back to my point; I'd given up. I figured I ought to just be happy that I was still relatively wrinkle-free, and leave it at that. I had a makeup /makeup removal routine that I was following and it seemed to be working more than not and I just resolved to be content. And I was.

And then I discovered something amazingly obvious.

A few months ago, my work routine changed. Slowly, but surely, I started to notice a change in my undereye area. It wasn't looking as smooth as it had, and was suddenly seeming quite dry, and twice as puffy in the mornings. I couldn't put my finger on what could be causing this -- and then it suddenly made sense: I was still using the same makeup routines, but I wasn't using them as often. Considerably less, in fact. Most significantly, I was no longer using eye-makeup remover on a daily basis, because I wasn't using eye-makeup on a daily basis. Previously, I used it before going to bed and that was it. Curious, I decided to try applying it when I woke up. Voila.

The product?

Lancome's BiFacial eye makeup remover.

The results?

Miraculously, within 10 minutes of applying just a very small amount, the eye contour was totally smooth, uncreased, no sleep lines, and not a trace of puffiness. I couldn't believe I'd been using the stuff for so many years, and never tried it in this manner. But then, who would? It's sold as makeup remover, not eye de-puffer.

The cons?

Yes, one. It's feels a bit greasy, which I hate. But it's not like you have to keep it on after it's done it's job. And you really, truly only need one dab on a cotton pad to do both eyes. Lines and wrinkles start out as creased dry skin that compounds over time. No you can't stop them from coming, but why the hell not slow the buggers down?

Additional Tips For Preventing Puffy Eyes:

  1. Salt causes water retention, which can lead to puffy eyes. Decrease your salt intake if it's already high, and increase your water intake.

  2. Sleep with your head elevated.

  3. Make sure you're properly nourished; a vitamin deficiency could be to blame.

  4. Don't overlseep -- this really can do a number on your eyes.

  5. Treat allergies if you're suffering from them; they can cause this all on their own.

My wife says that her eyes become more puffy when she wears glasses instead of contacts. Add that to the list of tips.

Im not sure thats really a practical tip, telling people not to wear glasses?? Not everyone has, or can wear, contacts.

I think I have more of a problem with black circles. :-( When they're really bad, I wear my glasses to hind behind.

Well, it certainly wouldn't be a good tip for people who can't wear contacts. But wouldn't it for those who can??

Whitney -- I have a a hub on that somewhere.. :)

Vrecc - I cant say I agree that it is, no. Telling people to stop wearing glasses and get contacts because their undereyes get puffy is like telling people to stop wearing a watch because it leaves a mark on their arm. I think the logical solution for your wife's dilemma would be getting a different pair of glasses, because it sounds like hers don't fit in some respect.

(As the solution for the watch issue would be getting a band that fits better.)

Well, I'll concede for a moment and also note that there are those that feel contacts are not good for the eyes. So, recommending that they wear contacts would not be a good tip for reducing puffy eyes. That's just exchanging one problem for another.

My wife is Chinese. Chinese have this puffy eye issue pretty badly. All of them say that eyeglasses make it worse and contacts don't. But hey! It could be an old wives tale and they all don't know what they are talking about.

No problem Whitney. You are Chinese? I read and posted on your Chinese New Year's recipes.

Vrecc - Errrr... Whitney was talking to me! I dont know what types of problems are specific to Chinese women, but the only part of a pair of glasses which would touch the undereye are the nose pads. Maybe hers are too tight. If they are too tight, they may be comensating for frames that aren't the right size.

Whitney - If you dont find it let me know and I'll post a link to it. It was actually only about concealing though, not preventing, so it may not be what you wanted.

Great hub, Isabella! I'm like Whitney, though, and have much bigger problems with black circles under my eyes. I'll go look for your hub on that now. Maybe you should link to it from this hub, just in case someone clicks 'cause the title sounds related and is really looking for the dark circles thing?

Compusmart - Thanks!

Cinda - I suppose it's down to preference. I prefer not having puffy eyes. ;)

Helena - Thanks! And I see you found it already -- I have figured out a few other tips in the last few months, so maybe I'll make a hub on how to get rid of them...

I would rather have dark circles cos at least you can hide it easily with concealer, with my puffy eyes if i put concealer they get worst becasue the makeup seems to be like an allergy, good old cucumber aways helps abit and iced peas

A fabulous thing to use on dark circles is Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, it's pretty expensive, but lasts a long time and it is truely wonderful. You can use it on any discoloured skin, like red spots or thread veins. I highly reccomend it.

I have really bad puffy eyes and I am only 19. I used many creams and nothing works. I was told by my allergist it was caused from allergies but i soon realized it wasnt. The more i sleep the more I notice how puffy my eyes are. I try everything you could possible imagine:Cold spoons, frozen foods, cucumbers, sleep less sleep,im begining to give up and my last resort is to try surgery; im not to thrilled to have surgery on my face but i rather not have such a low self esteem. Having puffy eyes can be extremly stressful, especially while having a conversation with someone b/c all i can think of is what other people think when they see these swollen puffy eyes. its not something i want people thinking about when they look me. Well if anyone knows of another solution than surgery please feel free and give me some advice. thanks much kailtyn
