I used to go trout fishing all the time on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in the tribal trout ponds in front of K.O.A. Campground on Big Cove road and I would set there and I could see the trout swimming all around my bait but they wouldn't touch it. I wanted to jump in the pond and throw the trout out of the pond.

I started doing research until I came across a way to catch trout out of a pond , lake or pool in a river almost every time I wanted to. It was really simple when I finally figured it out. Guess what you need. It really is simple.

You can really use any type of bait casting or spinning reel and you need clear plastic bobbers , small split shot and a supply of various colored dry flies usually used for fly fishing but were going to think outside the box and present our dry flies to the trout in a new way that will have them going after your flies and you will be catching some nice trout.

You want to set your rod and reel up with your plastic clear bobber at the top and 24 - 30 inches down you want the dry fly. Black ones worked best for me in the ponds up at Cherokee North Carolina. You may or may not want to use a very small split shot about 12 inches up the line from the dry fly. Cast your dry fly out and let it set there for a minute or so and then about every minute just give the line a little jiggle and tug and before you know it a big trout will grab the dry fly and in no time at all you will have your limit. If you try one color dry fly for 45 minutes or so with no action try a different color. Black , red or bright green will usually catch the average trout. But you may come up with a particular color that works for your pond or lake.

The clear plastic bobber is very important and you will want to purchase a supply in various sizes. Dry fly's fished under a clear plastic bobber will produce hits from trout when nothing else seems to work. I have had great success using the same method in large pools in rivers and streams.

If your fishing where you know there are a lot of small pan fish like bream , perch , sun fish , crappie etc I would suggest either purchasing or digging you up a supply of small worms to fish about 18 to 24 inches under a small to medium size bobber.

Put your worm on a small hook with little or none of the worm hanging off and cast out into places where you suspect fish may be waiting. If you've never been fishing before you won't believe the thrill you will get when you see that bobber vanish under the water the first time. There really isn't another feeling like it in the world.

If your worms are to large for the hook its perfectly alright to break your worm in half and use a half of a small worm. But keep in mind you want fresh active worms and you will catch more fish. If your fishing in a small pond and not catching any fish try throwing further out or look for a large rock or log in the water and fish your bait near it. Once you learn where the fish are in a particular pond or lake you will usually find fish there every time you go back.

You can also try crickets or small grasshoppers for pan fish. Hook your cricket or grasshopper through the back to keep it alive and kicking the longest. Movement in the water will attract fish and before you know it you'll have big bream grabbing your bait. Be sure to keep crickets cool and in the shade and if you use them several days place a sponge with water in with the crickets and a piece of bread or lettuce.

Pan Fish and trout sometimes love meal worms. Take some along and try them to see if the fish in your area will bite them.

If your not sure be sure you know what fresh or live bait you can use legally in a particular stream , pond or lake. Check the regulations in your area to see if you need a fishing license.I would suggest checking with your local fish and game officers and obtain a copy of the fishing regulations for your area.

If you go fishing with a group of people have each person to try a different bait to see what works best and then everyone can use what works.

Don't litter. Don't throw bait containers down. We even take a trash bag along and pick up other peoples trash. Try to leave any place you go fishing as clean or cleaner than when you first got there.

If you use the right bait you can catch catfish almost every time you go fishing. And you will find that catfish in different lakes , ponds and streams will bite on different baits. What works for one pond , stream or lake may not work in another. The below baits will usually work though. 1. Cut Bait , you can buy mullet or other bait fish and cut them up for bait.

2. Large night crawlers will often entice large catfish into biting.

3. Chicken Livers are a great bait. lay them out and let them dry out a little before putting them on the hook.

4. You can make a great dough bait for catfish out of cooked white rice , flour , cornmeal , and strawberry jello powder. Mix it all together and you want it so it will for a tight ball and let you shape it around your hook.

5. Fresh uncooked shrimp is a great bait for catfish. For better results soak it in vanilla flavoring for a hour or two and you will catch more fish.
