Grammy Moments
Grammy Moments Can Be Funny, Touching, or Just Plain Weird
Grammys are king of the music awards. It is an event that professionals in the music industry look forward to each year. The Grammy Awards are televised as well. In 2008, the Grammy Awards celebrated their 50th year.
With such a mixture of creative people, there are bound to be some interesting Grammy moments. So what are some of the best Grammy moments? Well, not all of them are good. Some of the Grammy moments are, shall we say, interesting.
Controversial? Grammy Moment in 1973
In 1973 Helen Reddy accepts the Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her hit single "I Am Woman". I Am Woman would become the anthem for women's rights. When accepting her Grammy Award, Helen Reddy proceeds to thank God because "she makes everything possible". The television network was inundated with complaints.
One of the Worst Snub Grammy Moments Plain For All to See
One of the 1975 Grammy Moments
In 1975 at the Grammy Awards, David Bowie presents the Grammy Award to Aretha Franklin for Best Rhythm and Blue Performance by a Female. Aretha totally snubs Bowie and treats him with disrespect when she accepts the trophy from Bowie. It was a difficult time for Bowie. More than twenty years later, David Bowie still mentions the Grammy snub.
One of the Last Grammy Moments for Host Andy Williams
Andy Williams hosted the Grammy Awards for many years. His reign as Grammy host would end in 1976. Stevie Wonder was in Nigeria and supposed to appear on the Grammy Awards via satellite. The awards show was having technical problems. It seemed as if the broadcast would not be able to connect with Stevie. Flustered, Andy said, "Stevie, can you see us now?"
One of the Best Grammy Moments - We Are the World Win
Touching Grammy Moments
Maybe the most touching Grammy moment in history is when Yoko Ono is given a Grammy in honor of her deceased husband, John Lennon.
Another touching Grammy Awards moment is when Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie won the Grammy Award in 1986 for Song of the Year.
We Are the World was truly an ambitious project. This was perhaps the biggest group of popular musicians ever gathered at once to record a song. This song was used to raise money for Africa.
If you don't know your 80s singers, just know that if you were someone, you performed in this song. All of these singers were HUGE! Names like Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Huey Lewis, Dionne Warwick, and on and on. MEGASTARS, I tell ya. It was phenomenal.
Funny Grammy Moments
One of the funniest Grammy moments ever was with the legendary Little Richard. In 1987, Little Richard was a presenter at the Grammys. Little Richard proceeded to steal the award show. Before reading his scripted speech, Little Richard wonders aloud why he hasn't won a Grammy yet. And in a way that only Little Richard can pull off.
In 1994, Bono is presenting a Grammy Award to the legendary Frank Sinatra. Obviously inebriated, Bono starts rambling and babbling. He calls Sinatra 'the Big Bang of pop' and other oddities. When Sinatra accepts the Grammy, he himself starts rambling and gets his speech abruptly cut off.One of the Weirdest Grammy Moments Ever
One of the Weirdest Grammy Moments in 1998
I think that the 1998 Grammy Awards probably would win the award for Weirdest Grammy Moment. Bob Dylan is performing live at the Grammy Awards. From out of nowhere, a man wearing no shirt with the words "Soy Bomb" painted on his chest appears on stage. He starts dancing along (badly) to Bob Dylan's song. The best part is that Bob Dylan just carries on as if nothing is happening. Security guards remove the stranger off the stage quickly and no one is hurt. Later, the guy said that his dance was an act of 'revolution'.
Fashion Grammy Moment with Jennifer Lopez
Fashion Grammy Moments
The 2000 Grammy awards displayed the racy styling of Jennifer Lopez a la the now infamous green dress by Versace. The neckline was cut all the way to the waist. The dress bared so much that it had to be taped to Lopez's body to keep her R-rated.
The very next year, Toni Braxton appears at the Grammys wearing a flimsy little white number. Jon Stewart, the Grammy host, called it a white scarf.Grammy Moments With Eminem and Elton John
Touching? Grammy Moment with a Surprising Finale (or Two)
In 2001 Eminem was being criticized harshly by members of the gay community. They claimed Eminem songs contained anti-gay lyrics and promoted hatred toward homosexuals. In response, Eminem performed his critically acclaimed hit song "Stan" live at the Grammys.
The catch? Eminem performed with the openly gay Elton John. There was even a genuine hug at the end of the performance. Then Eminem being Eminem, displays a middle finger to the crowd.
Some of the Worst Grammy Moments
The 2004 Grammy Awards ceremony had one of the worst (and disrespectful) displays in Grammy history. Amy Lee of Evanescence was speaking during her acceptance speech for Best New Artist. In the middle of the speech, rapper 50 Cent strolled across the stage. 50 Cent was also nominated for the Grammy award. 50 Cent said it was a protest for rap music not being recognized.
A similar Grammy incident occurred in 1998. Shawn Colvin was giving a Grammy acceptance speech. All at once Ol' Dirty B****** (sorry, that's the name), runs up to the podium. He thought that Wu Tang Clan should have won Best Rap Album instead of Sean "Puffy" Combs and wants to announce it to the world. Which he does.
Any Other Grammy Moments Out There?
So, that's it for now. I'm sure I have missed some of the best Grammy moments. Let me know if you think of any other Grammy moments that I should add.
