Colloidal Silver - Pros

What is Colloidal? A colloid is defined as particles which remain suspended without forming a dissolved solution. Colloidal silver is a liquid suspension of microscopic particles of silver.

Colloidal silver with concentrations of 30 parts per million (ppm) or less are typically manufactured using an electrolysis process, colloidal silver with higher concentrations of 50 ppm or more are solutions that have been bound with a protein to disperse the particles.

Research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has shown that silver is bactericidal to some 650 strains of disease causing organisms and that resistant strains can not develop with silver the way that they will with antibiotics.

More recently "Science Digest" reported in an article entitled "Our Mightiest Germ Fighter", that "silver is emerging as a wonder of modern medicine."

Colloidal Silver has proven itself useful against all species of fungi, parasites, bacteria, protozoa, and certain viruses. (for more uses see Health Source)

The ancients stored their water in silver vessels to prevent bacteria from growing.

So we have history going way back regarding the benefits of silver and now more recently colloidal silver uses. In wars it was commonly used for it's rapid healing qualities. On a personal note I have used 25 drops of 250ppm in 4 oz of water for 3-4 days, 2-3 times a day when symptoms of a cold or flu are felt. The biggest joy is canker sores, what use to take several painful days to clear now take 12 hours or less when directly applying colloidal silver to the wound. How clumsy to bite myself, but it happens, colloidal worked great.

I use Natural Path / Silver Wings Colloidal Silver, a silver protein is used which is chelated to a protein, this keeps it in suspension much more effectively than the electrolysis process. It seems there's a lot of junk out there and if the silver particle disengages from suspension you will have residue at the bottom of the bottle. Hence, there your benefit sits, at the bottom instead of in you.

Colloidal - Cons

The other side of Colloidal Silver. This happy couples story:

  • A 38-year-old man developed argyria after ingesting approximately 16 ounces of 450 ppm colloidal silver three times a day for 10 months to treat his arthritis and other conditions. He made the solution with a simple battery-operated chamber that leached silver from pure silver wire. He had obtained the plans from information on the Internet. The photograph to the right shows how his skin color compares to that of normal skin.

FDA laboratory studies have found that the amount of silver in some product samples has varied from 15.2% to 124% of the amount listed on the product labels. The amount of silver required to produce argyria is unknown. However, the FDA has concluded that the risk of using silver products exceeds any unsubstantiated benefit. So far, eleven cases of argyria related to silver products have been reported:

You can go on forever with this side of the coin. I believe the point is moderation, if you drink to much water to fast you can get water intoxication. We know there's junk out there and the question we ask now days is who is the FDA really looking after? There's a whole debate on that for another day.

The majority of Blue Skin cases are associated with people making their own CS at home. Contamination and uncontrolled processes done at home labs increases the chances of incidences. The cost of CS is inexpensive, there's really no reason to chance it by making it at home.

Nice hub rb - and good info. I have been making my own "silver water" for years and it has proved effective against countless ailments. If I drink too much I start a massive detox, which is very uncomfortable. So I'm always very careful about the intake level. I've heard of others "turning blue" but I could never get that much into my system. Good for you for getting this info out there. More people need to know about it.

Thanks for the comment Madame X, it's so effective and cheap that's why the pharma companies put it down.

Argyria (skin greying) from taking colloidal silver is an extremely rare condition.

I’ve been taking colloidal silver daily for 12 years now, and my skin is still as white as ever. It is all in the dosage.

I watched Mr. Karason -- the so-called "colloidal silver blue man" -- on television and he was demonstrating how much he takes to stay infection-free. It is WAY too much. Like twenty or thirty times the normal daily dosage. No wonder he turned blue.

I was fortunate enough to find a “safe dosage” report at http://www.TheSilverEdge.com, which explains a simple formula based on EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) dosage figures for determing the right amount of colloidal silver for your body weight, so you can use it safely to avoid infection and disease.

There's also lots of good info on safe and sane colloidal silver usage at http://www.ColloidalSilverSecrets.blogspot.com
