Things That Can Make Urine Smell Bad

So you’ve just been to the little boy’s or girl’s room and came out a bit stunned – your tinkle smelled a bit rank. You think back to what could be causing this, and rule out any chance of STD infection from your significant other. What else could it be? You pop by the doctor and manage to rule out UTIs and a host of other non-sexually transmitted infections.

You’re glad to know nothing funky is making camp down in the nether lands….. but you’re still wondering what the freak this sudden change in piddle is. And then it hits you – you’ve recently taken up coffee. Ok, so you didn’t really take it up, you more or less started consuming 10 cups a day, straight off the bat. (Hey, you’re allowed to do things like this when you have OCD, don’t worry about it.) You call up your GP and he tells you to stop drinking coffee, or hold your nose the next time you potty.

You thank him for his expert advice and hang up. What now? Do you really want to give this new obsession up? Could you, even? Well, if you can’t, you’re not alone. If you only drink a cup or two a day you might not notice it. Or, if you’re a smoker, you probably wouldn’t notice it at all, since your olfactory do-dads are probably skint. But hey, at least you can comfort yourself with the knowledge you’re not actually ill. So what else makes your tiddle go wonkey? Let’s take a look at the most common offenders:

  1. Coffee -- Yeah, ok, we already said this, but just in case you were too impatient to garner that info from the above writings.

  2. Asparagus -- We’ve all heard this one, right? Personally I’m surprised anyone knows this to be true/ I can’t believe people eat this stuff.

  3. Beer -- Yeah, it does. And if you weren’t so drunk, you’d realize it!

  4. Garlic -- Lots of garlic can really make you stink; everywhere!

  5. Curry -- Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

So what can you do? If you’re not willing to give any of these up, but still want your urine to have a normal urine-y smell, the simplest method is increasing your water intake. This will help your body can flush the icky smell out more easily – and less noticeably.

xx Isabella

Tea, broccoli, brussels sprouts, too. Beets don't make it stink but they do give it a lovely pink color.

Learnt something today, thanks. Tip for beer drinkers: Go to the loo once a bottle, and your water won't stink so much, and your belly won't go to pot.

Great advice. Drinking healthy amounts of water is always a great idea. My wife wouldn't even drink water if I didn't remind her to.

Geez Isabella,

What DO you like to eat?

I love asparagus and curry, though not on the same plate. And I enjoy a coupla coffees a day too, but will be testing it without cream after my last bottle of International Delight cream substitute runs out. I may have to quit all together if I can't stand it without my soy based milk, cos I ain't getting a bra, no way! And I'm cutting back on anything soybased or otherwise xenoestrogenous (OK, I had to coin that one) since oestrogen-mimics are very bad for the prostate and hormone balance, and I simply 'gots to' lose some weight.

"So why do I not use milk?", you finally ask. Because I seem to recall reading somewhere that US federal standards permit up to 2% puss and blood in their raw milk!!! And I'd just as soon not even bother finding out what it is here in Canada, 'cause standards will change.

EW you say?

Hey Ed,

Read what you just wrote about milk...2% puss and blood in their 'RAW' milk. That means it gets totally filtered and pasturized and cleaned. haha They allow that 2% of blood and puss in the 'RAW' milk because their filtering processes are set up to be able to remove that amount of impurities with ease!

And anyways, do you eat bread? I bet you do, or any grain product for that matter...just imagine how many grasshoppers and bugs and who knows what are in a loaf of bread, for example.

Our bodies are also equipped with this thing called an immune system haha...take care of your body and it will take care of you!

I actually drink more than 2 LITRES of water everyday (I think it's the best beverage ever!) but my urine still smells bad or maybe I'm just paranoid 'coz my mom has a really good sense of smell and she always tells me to flush the toilet 'coz it stinks even though I already had, so I ended up brushing it instead. :(

I actually told my mom that her sense of smell is both a gift and a curse!

Wow! I bought some asparagus a couple of days ago and it has lasted a while so it has been going in my daily meals leaving me with a right old stink.

So happy I now know who the offender is. I was getting a little scared. Phew :)

Good to know, both my 9month old son and me have had a strange smelling pee, I was pretty worried. They had a sale on asparagus, and we both have been eating it lately.
