Book Review: Healthy Highways: The Traveler’s Guide to Healthy Eating
Traveling can be a real challenge for those who are trying to eat healthy and watch their weight. All to often, the end result of a vacation getaway results in an expanding waistline, rather than one that stays the same or decreases.
It can be challenging to find healthy food on the go even in your own home town, and this becomes even more difficult when you find yourself in unfamiliar territory. That's why Nikki and David Goldbeck wrote Healthy Highways: The Traveler's Guide to Healthy Eating. Unlike many books that tell you what to eat and how to make healthy eating choices, this book focuses instead on where to eat.
Organized in alphabetical order by state and city, with Healthy Highways, you can easily locate healthy food resources no matter where your travels take you throughout the United States. The book features more than 1,900 places to purchase healthy food on the road. Listings include both natural food stores and restaurants that offer various types of healthy dining options.
Just like other travel guides you may have seen, Healthy Highways uses symbols to designate features of particular facilities. The authors highlight eateries that have options for vegetarians and vegans, as well as those that feature whole foods and organic and/or locally grown produce.
Each entry includes labels that designate availability of particular types of food and features, including:
- Alcohol served
- Baked goods made on site
- Deli
- Eating area available
- Emphasis on organic ingredients
- Freshly prepared foods
- Juice bar
- Kosher
- Ownership designation (chain, co-op, etc.)
- Salad bar available
- Seating options
- Self-service (buffet, cafeteria, order at counter)
- Take-out available
- Vegan or Vegan-friendly
- Vegetarian or Vegetarian-friendly
- Wait staff
Additionally, restaurants that meet the Green Restaurant Association's standards for ecological sustainability are designated as "Certified Green Restaurants".
This book truly makes it easy for readers to identify the best possible choices for healthy dining on the road. Just find the states that you plan to travel through on your next vacation. At the front of each state, you will find a map that has the featured eateries clearly marked with an arrow and a number. The number corresponds with the location description, which allows you to learn the details of what the restaurant or natural food store has to offer. Travel directions to each establishment are also included.
Additional healthy dining publications by Nikki and David Goldbeck include The Supermarket Handbook, American Wholefoods Cuisine, and many others.
