In 1992 a few writers and artists left Marvel comics to pursue their own creations in comic book form, so that they themselves could control their own comic creations and have total exclusive control on every aspect of their characters, things like merchandising toy lines and crossovers with other comic book characters with other companies to name a few.

One such comic book was called Spawn, it was created by Todd Mcfarlane who previously reinvigorated the Spiderman titles with highly detailed art that inspired many would be artists to emulate his art style, he started to write on a new Spiderman title that was created for him and he did the art too which melded his storytelling skills to perfection and he came up with some great and instant classic one off stories and some great serialized comic book stories that continues one after the other in succession.

The first issue of Spawn deals with the story of a soldier Al Simmons who in his former life was a government assassin and general dogs body to get rid of key players in warfare situations on a regular basis, but on one particular day he is set up and killed by the government he is working for, and subsequently sent to hell for his troubles, he had a wife and later on a child that was not his.

When he later returned to earth, he quickly realised that he was a shadow of his former self, with a completely burnt body and a living symbiote costume that gave him limited hells power, you see he made a deal with the Malebolgia - the devil, so he could see his wife again, but it was on the devils terms.

Spawn had a choice to lead the devils army in the coming armageddon, the war against hell and heaven or lose his soul to the devil and lose his wife.
