It's Not Always All Business - How About My Dog

Pets Helping People

Every once in a while we have to change gears and change our thoughts so we don't get in a rut. This brings me to Nikki, my dog.

As I became ill several years ago sleeping long hours, constant headaches and general weakness as if one had the flu 24/7, it was at the same time I inherited Nikki. She was a mixed 4 year old, 20 pound cocker and something. Hind legs longer than the front and a overhanging forehead. I wasn't much of a pet lover then, but she needed a home so I got suckered in.

She was a bit sassy, but I soon showed her who was the boss.

Over the next several months we spent more time together because I was home a lot due to illness. She became a comfort to have around, I had no idea there would soon be a lesson and purpose to this little 20 pound inheritance.

Nikkis Illness

I switched her once a month grooming over to a home groomer. After the first visit to the new groomer she came home sick, scratching and lethargic, this lasted a few days and gone. The next month she went back, this time she came home and the same thing happened but worse.

She kept scratching, lost her appetite and went from 20 pounds down to 14 pounds. It was time to find a vet and get to the bottom of this. She had not eaten in 3 days and looked really sick. Of course the vet hydrated her and did the blood work. By this time I was very fond of this little girl who kept me company all this while and I hit the Internet looking for answers.

Lesson #1 - it helps to take your mind off your problems and focus on something else.

As sick as I was we went to the vets everyday for her tests and hydration, as she had not eaten for 5-6 days now.

The Results

The vet and I had came to the same conclusion, Nikki had adrenal failure, Addisons disease. Manageable with a monthly injection of DOCP, but she was so weak even after the injection she wouldn't eat. I made all kinds of concessions so she would be comfortable, like sleep in my bed. One night I felt her shake like she was scratching, she also urinated in the bed. Later I discovered she had actually had a seizure and I didn't know it.

Sunday Afternoon

It was a few days later on a Sunday afternoon that she uncharacteristically lay in her travel cage all day. As I lay on the couch to rest I heard a sudden rattle of the cage, as i approached she lay on her side, she was having a seizure. A seizure shocks the body forcing out liquids mainly from her bladder and mouth. As I held her in my arms she looked at me as to say "what is happening" all I could do is pose a threat to the man above, I said out loud " Ok God if your going to take her you better take care of her" like I was in any position to make a threat.

Nikki recovered in due time and regained her poundage back and her appetite. Now here is the twister, I barely used the Internet before this and just poured over all the information I could find to help and understand her condition. This is what actually started me in the Internet business, but there's more. After gaining this new knowledge about adrenal stress and the likes, I found some answers to my own health issues. I too had a form of adrenal stress and 2 years with the doctors couldn't compare with the answers Nikki had brought to me.

How strange is nature and the way it delivers solutions if we just take the time to look and listen.

In this crazy world where we run around looking for this and that, if problems strike sit back, take a seat and maybe, just maybe Your Nikki will come to you.

(Ok back to business)

Hi

What a lovely story. Nikki's just beautiful and it seems like you helped each other. I'm so glad you're both better. I love my Jack Russell. He's 14 now but he's my best friend. Good luck to you both.

Best Regards
