Banish Migraine Headaches

Updated on July 14, 2011

If you’ve suffered from migraines you will know just how intense and debilitating they are, but I made changes and now I no longer get them.

This is my experience of how I cured migraine headaches. I have no medical training whatsoever and this article is simply my experience of what worked for me. What’s even better is that I achieved this using natural health remedies.

I hope that if you suffer from, or know anyone who does suffer from migraines that my experience overcoming the debilitating effects of migraines helps.

When my doctor asked me to grade the migraine pain out of ten, I’m sure I gave a murderous look and said twelve! I’m not a suicidal person by any means but when I had a migraine, I told my doctor “I just want to die”.

The pain is intense and indescribable; the after effects shattering. I left my doctors office with a cocktail of prescription medicine.

A cocktail of drugs?

Time to claim my life back!

I wanted to have a life free of pain. When I verbalized “I just want to die” to my doctor I realized that it was time to take charge of my life and be a victim no more. It was one of those light bulb moments in my life.

I had much more life to live – that I wanted to live and saying those words (even though I didn’t mean them literally) was a shock to me.

I wanted to live my life without the drugs too!

Migraines invaded my head and at first they stopped by once or twice a year. Over the decades they paid their unwelcome visit more regularly and at one stage they crashed into my life two or three times a week. Each one knocked me out for two days.

The first day was intense throbbing, light sensitive pain, the second feeling totally washed out and “spacey”.

During the first day I was incapable of doing anything except lying in a darkened room, trying to sleep; not eating. The second day I could up but I was incredibly tired and I had little clarity in thinking. My brain was “fuzzy”.

Everyone’s migraine headaches are different but this was my pattern and is reasonably typical.

When they blundered into my life on a more regular basis my absences from work increased.

Confidence plummeted. I was a business woman who had a diary of appointments. The frequency of the migraines meant I could no longer rely on keeping appointments because I just didn’t know whether I would be healthy enough for the meeting. It became a vicious unwelcome cycle.

My family and friends worried about me. Heck, I worried about me too.

A headache is a symptom

I chose to see the migraine headache as a symptom of a problem, or problems.

I believe that this is the first step in curing yourself of migraine headaches.

But, what was the problem? That was the key to figuring this out, and solving it so that I no longer suffered the pain.

There is so much conflicting advice about migraines that, for a time, I spun around in circles wondering what to do; wondering what advice to take.

I wanted a more relaxing life and one free of pain.

Multi-faceted approach to curing migraine headaches

I took many steps to cure migraines.

I went to my doctor, a physio-therapist, a natural health practitioner, an iridologist, a chiropractor, a massage therapist and I took up yoga.

Some treatments worked for me and some didn’t.

What worked so that today I no longer suffer migraine pain

This is what worked for me. I whole-heartedly embraced the quest to eliminate this horrible pain from my life and it involved many changes.

  • Diet

Problem:

From my natural health practitioner I discovered I was allergic to many food types. If you are like me, you might wonder what that had to do with headaches but it was just one more symptom of my body being overloaded and fighting back via the headaches.

Solution:

I eliminated this food from my diet. It took many weeks for the toxins to be eliminated in my body.

  • Body alignment

Problem

My chiropractor discovered that my neck and back were out of alignment.

Solution

She manipulated my neck and spine so that pressure was released from my neck and spine.

  • Exercise

Problem

Stress and lack of exercise.

Solution

I began yoga; Iyengar style. The focus on my breath and body alignment is an amazing way to exercise and relax.

  • Job

Problem

I accepted that my job was causing me a whole lot of stress.

Solution

I tried to change my attitude and that worked for awhile.

But, I finally accepted that I needed to change my job and put a plan in place to achieve that.

I’m really happy to say that this focus and the changes worked for me.

Whilst I am very hesitant to say that I’m cured of migraines, I haven’t had one for many years now and it’s a really joyful thing.   I try not “sweat the small stuff”.

I’ve claimed my life back to do things to enjoy my life in a way which is meaningful to me.  That’s a very powerful thing.

It Wasn't Easy to Banish Migraines

Making this list makes it seem easy. It wasn’t. There were times of tears and frustrations. I constantly questioned my decisions and so did the people around me.

I HAD to stay focused on “me” and what was important to me as I implemented these radical changes to eliminate the devastation these headaches caused me.

The changes have been miraculous and I am now pain free and living the life I want to live - traveling the world and writing about it! It's a great life.
