Getting Comfortable with the Cards

The best way to learn to read tarot cards is to first choose a tarot deck and take it home. Don't worry at first about the meanings of the cards or how to lay them out or how to read them once you get them home. Choosing a deck is an important step, and it pays to spend as much time as you need with it.

Today, so many fabulous decks are available that it is a real treat just to look at them all. The most common deck is the Rider-Waite Tarot. First published in 1909 by US Games (the organization that still holds the copyright), the cards in the Rider-Waite deck were drawn by artist Pamela Colman Smith under the instruction of 19th century mystic Arthur Edward Waite, whose written works on tarot and the occult were published by the Rider Company.

Although the Rider-Waite deck is a common deck today (and some even might say even the standard deck today) it was a significant departure from the Christianized decks available before to its 19th century creators. In the Rider-Waite deck the Pope becomes The Hierophant, and the Papess becomes the High Priestess, and the Devil becomes less of an omen of evil and more an avatar of the pagan god Pan.

If you don't have a store near you that carries a good selection of cards, you can browse 115 different decks at the US Games website at http://www.usgamesinc.com/home.php?cat=3. The Hanson Roberts Deck is also a popular first deck because of the brilliant colors, the fairy tale imagery, and the benign quality of the artwork. It's a good 'safe' deck to start out with if you are feeling the least bit apprehensive. The Morgan Greer Deck also has a fairy tale feel to it, with slightly less childlike imagery, and brilliant coloring. The New Palladini Deck also has traditional symbolism with bright colors and mythic illustrations that appeal to many first time users.

Although you can purchase many different novelty decks now (all cats, all dogs, all animals, all Egyptian, all Native American), I personally recommend starting with a more traditional deck so you can become familiar with the original symbolism of each card over time. Then, if you find you enjoy the traditional deck and are drawn to a novelty deck, go for it.

Once you choose your deck, take it home, take the cards out of the box, and spend some time just looking at them in a quiet place. It is not a bad idea to make a bit of a ceremony out of this. At the very least, you should be alone, and in an uninterrupted space for at least half an hour or more. Light a candle or some incense and look over each image. Write down any impressions that come to you if you wish. Some people like to keep a special journal for readings and tarot intuitions. Especially in the beginning, you might find this very helpful.

When you are done looking at the cards and touching each one, do not put them back into the box. Wrap them in a favorite scarf or small decorative bag, or a decorative box. Take some care with how you intend to store them. Once you choose something to wrap or store them in, stay with that and don't be changing things around all the time.

Lay the wrapped cards (or boxed or bagged cards) next to your bed that night and record anything that might come up in your dreams or when you awake. Whether you realize it or not, you have started a journey into yourself and your place in creation, a very exciting journey. Over time you will find yourself developing a relationship with the cards as if they were alive. This is what you want and why it is important to take some time looking at cards and choose a deck that speaks to you.

Next hub, I will write more about the meanings of the cards and how to become intimate with those meanings over time.

Great hub! You've certainly provided the right information as far as what to look for. Those new to the Tarot will definately appreciate your comparison of some of the many decks out there. Neat stuff!

I've been offline due to computer mishap for two days and came back to read this delightful hub that told me lots about tarot cards that I never knew. Well done, asusual,pg. Looking forward to the next installment.

Hi satori & robie2! I've been offline all day today too--the server was down, and I'm technologically impaired, so who knows how long it was down and how long it was just me being ignorant--impossible to tell. I will say this: Tech support people are lovely and useless. Very nice people, no help whatsoever. Bill finally got it all going this evening. He has a Mac and I have a PC, so we have a router and an external modem, and god knows what else. I'm definitely Mac-bound once my PC dies. Thanks for all the positive feecback! Now I'm on to tech problem 2 per Satori's instructions... fixing my links!!! Thanks!

I was taught that a Tarot set had to be chosen for you about something you were interested in. Mine is Tarot of the Ages as I am interested in ancient history. Some great information though.

It looks like I am going to have to click on all the writers that I am a fan of because I am not getting notifications from Hubpages that a hub has been published. :( Found this article as I had time to read and write tonight. :)

Your guidance is right on!

I have the Rider deck and its about 30 years old; I used to do professional readings. I found that after spreading the cards, and allowing messages to come through without focusing to much on the "meanings" of the cards, will give me a very good connection in receiving guidance that I could pass on to my clients. I stopped doing readings about a year and a half ago, because it opens me up to spirit visitors and it became a little scary!

Enjoyed your hub!

Hi tj mum! Thank you so much for your comment! I think anything that takes the fear away and helps you connect to thecards is a great idea. The advice you got was great. I just never thogh of it.Tarot of the Ages is wonderful deck. My life partner thinks his name is Scottish but it's hard to trace--his last name is Hutson--have you ever heard that name? Thanks again! Hi violetsun!!! So great to see you again! I've had the same experience doing other people's readings---if I just lay out the cards and then 'open myself up' and say whatever comes out first, that's when I do the best readings. It's hard to describe but it's almost like mentally flipping a switch that "turns 'me' off." Spirits will stick to someone who can do that though, you are right there. It's weird--about half the women in my family have from a very young age been able to recognize spirits and communicate with them even when we don't much want to, which can get creepy. But I've found if you just regard them the way you do ordinary living people, and if you are not afraid, they can't really do anything more than annoy you. Thanks for validating my same experience. Good to see you!

Well, no, but then I'm English! Many American's find their roots in the UK (even in England). We're a very diverse culture here now. I've put away my Tarot since having my boys, but perhaps now is the time to start reading again.

Oh! The mystery continues then! I have a name with uncertain ancestry too--it may be English, Welsh, who knows? After awhile everyone loses track. (o:

I bought a set of Tarot at the tender age of 16 and still use them, they are batered and worn ,but I cannot use any other. I did try once when I tried the celtic tarot but I just couldn't get the hang of the feel of them. My advice to anyone is to stick to the set you feel the best vibes and not to try any other..Great hub by the way
