How To Create A Picture For Your Wall
71This hub will show you how to create a piece of art work for your home. For this project I drew a Hawaiian sunset. Many times I hear people say they must pay a large amount of money to have a beautiful piece of art, or even a vase. One lady confessed she was cheap because she only paid twelve dollars for a beautiful vase. In my book the twelve dollars may have been way too much considering the amount of beautiful items people throw away every day. Go to the second hand store and for a couple of dollars you can find vases and picture frames in pristine condition. For this art project I bought a frame from the dollar store, and it looks just as nice on the wall as a thirty dollar frame. If you want a higher quality frame go to the second hand store and buy one. The point of this art project is to use what you already have, or to spend very little in creating it. Here are the supplies that I used for creating my wall art:
- A drawing pencil drawn on the blank side of an unneeded computer document.
- A drawing pencil.
- Water color pencils.
- A dollar store picture frame.
- A screwdriver.
- A hammer.
- A picture hanger.
For this entire art project I spent about a dollar, and the time it took me to draw the picture. Since I love Hawaii I love to draw pictures of sunsets and palm trees. I used the backside of a printed document to save paper, which also cuts down of the price of supplies for this project. If you feel you cannot draw a picture then try this exercise and see how easy drawing can be. Besides, this piece of art is for your own eyes and not for the world to see, unless of course you want the world to see it.
Step One: Draw Your Picture
Draw a picture of anything you like. I choose to draw a picture of a Hawaiian sunset based on several pictures I have. I love Hawaiian sunsets and part of me wishes I was there right now, especially when it is fifty degrees outside today. Pick a picture you love and draw this on the blank side of a piece of used printer paper. Next, add color to the sketch with colored pencils.
Step Two: Decide When The Drawing Is Completed
Take your time and decide when the drawing is completed. When satisfied it is time to select the frame for the drawing.
Step Three: Select A Frame
Select a picture frame for displaying your hand drawn art work. For this project I selected a diploma frame from the dollar store because these are large enough for documents that are eight by ten inches. The most important thing to remember is to measure the drawing to make sure the picture frame you choose is large enough.
Step Four: Put The Picture In The Frame
Use a screw driver to take the back off the picture frame. Now place the picture in the frame.
Step Five: Close Up The Frame
Step Six: Hang The Picture On The Wall
Take a hammer and nail a picture hanger to the wall. These are sold at Wal-mart, Target, Lowe's, Kmart, Jo'ann's, and most other larger stores that have a hardware department. At Jo'ann's Fabrics picture hangers are sold in the picture frame department. Picture hangers are cheap and only make a small hole in the wall, which can be covered up with spackle when you decide to take the picture off the wall.

very easy method nice hub
anjalichugh,
I am sure you can do the same thing if you try. Thanks for commenting :).
Lgali,
Thanks!
Great Hub SweetiePie, you are indeed a lady of many talents, and apparently need afraid, as we Ozzies say to "have a go".
Nice instructions and easy to follow. Thumbs up. :-[)
SweetiePie, The way you outline your methods and steps makes it easy to follow. Great Job. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and your artwork. C.S.
Thanks agvulpes for reading and commenting :). I am sure you are having much warmer weather their, and boy am I jealous. I never liked weather below 80 degrees personally.
C.S. Alexis,
Actually your art hubs have been inspiring me to do more of this. I am getting to the point where I might be able and willing to sell art work on ebay.
I love the drawings - particularly the monochromatic Hawaiian landscape with only the sunset providing the color! Nice touch! If only I can draw as well you then I'd be a happy man. Lovely, practical hub! :D
Cris A,
You should try drawing, and the great part about it is this is a free activity, except for the supplies you would have to buy.
Oh believe me I have tried and still try - but I guess I can only be the beholder of art such as yours! But that won't make me stop from my first rate doodling! LOL
Btw, nice new avatar :D
Cris A,
That is the spirit! By the way I think doodling is considered drawing. Thanks for the comment on my avatar, I played with the colors to give it more of a red saturation.
SweetiePie- WOW!! Another one of your hidden talents is revealed today. You never cease to amaze me with the entire gamut of talents hidden within you. I wish I was as talented as you in so many fields. Those pictures are beautiful. Do you prefer to actually stay outdoors while you paint them or prefer to use an existing painting to serve as the model for you or maybe use your own imagination to paint from.
I use a combination of photographs I take, magazine, and books to create a unique image. I have not copied a painting since I had to do that for a college assignment, but that was fun. I have drawn outside, but since I love to draw tropical settings I rely on photographs to create my drawings. I think you might enjoy drawing if you try it. Your comments very much touch me CW :).
Hi Sweetie Pie, this is a wonderful idea to share. :) It can indeed brighten up one's wall as well as a fun idea for a personalized gift. Do you also like to do portraits? :-)
Hi Ripplemaker,
So happy to see you again my friend, like the Moody Blues song :). I would need to practice drawing portrait because it has been awhile, but I used to be farely good at it. I really enjoy making art work for the walls though, it is fun and relaxing. I hope you have a wonderful day :).
I love the drawing. It looks so neat and drawn like a pro. and the frame complimented it.
I will try to this too. lol I can draw and you gave me an inspiration to start with. Very creative and nicely done!
Sheenarobisn,
I am sure you will create a beautiful picture. Glad to hear you enjoy art work too.
Just got home after rehearsals. :-) It feels good to be hubbing before sleeping. It's still an addiction huh? LOL yes, yes please practice more portraits..I also would like to see your work. Maybe one of these days, I could "persuade" you nicely to make one for me. Wow, wouldn't that be something? (I'm fishing, it's not obvious right?) Hahaha But nature is really good too. It's my favorite subject matter for photos and art.
Ripplemaker,
I would be happy to make a portrait for you. I think I am better at landscapes, but with practice I can get back into drawing people :). It is a great idea :).
I've always wanted to do a picture and hang it up in my own house but I never get them finished...I had plans once to do lot of paintings and hang them all over the house. But this plan dissolved when I have no time in the world except the time that is taken up by the time taking activities that fill my day.
But since you've had a go and presented it as a hub I may well do a hub on one of mine soon.
Nice pic by the way...I wished I lived near Hawaii beaches too..because it beats living around some people here in the uk
Yes I agree it actually means taking the time to sit down and work on these projects :). In the past I really had a hard time finishing projects, but writing how tos has actually motivated me to finish many of the projects that once sat unfinished. Also, I am getting ready to start selling some pieces on ebay and etsy, so making a stock pile of images for cards is a good thing. I really wish I could go to Hawaii more often, but I am not a money unlimited kind of gal unfortunately :).
Yay! Looking forward to it. (Skipping happily) Here's a big thank you hug. {((HUG))}
your'e a life saver! I could picture myself doing this with little effort.
thanks
Ripplemaker,
I really like this picture of you by the way. Which picture would you like me to draw?
Froggy,
I am sure you could too. Drawing is something we all can do :).
You are a veryu talented person SweetiePie.
I would love to sit down and do an oil painting. You have inspired me to do that.
Thank you
Brian
Brian,
I appreciate oil painting the best because you can go away and leave it for hours, and then come back and it is still wet enough to work with. I hope you enjoy painting when you get a chance.
I like your art! I do photography on the side and there is something to seeing your piece framed and hung on the wall.
I appreciate your sincere comments Erick. I hope you write some hubs about your photography.
