In this Hub I will demonstrate how to make a necklace and a matching bracelet. Do you enjoy buying beautiful jewelry? Why pay more for beautiful jewelry when you can make affordable pieces at home? When I wore the necklace I made for this hub to work one of my co-worker's said she wanted to rip it off my neck, which I consider to be a very nice compliment! My first Hub in this series explained How To Make Simple Jewelry, and for this Hub I will show you how to make a matching necklace and bracelet. The materials used for this project consist of jewelry wire, jewelry clasps, white acrylic beads, and a shell pendant. Amazingly all of these supplies cost less than five dollars because I already had a few of these on hand before I decided to make a new necklace and bracelet. If you were to buy a cute bracelet and necklace at the department store, or even at Walmart/Target, it would cost much more money than supplies used for this project. So if you are ready to make affordable jewelry pull up a chair and keep reading!

How To Make The Necklace

Here is what the final necklace looks like. I made this necklace using white acrylic beads, beading wire, and a shell.
Here is what the final necklace looks like. I made this necklace using white acrylic beads, beading wire, and a shell.

Step One: Attach The Clasp

For this necklace I secured the clasp by knotting it to the beading wire. There are many different methods used for attaching a clasp to the wire, but I prefer the simple ways over the complicated. If you want to make it really easy you can buy wire that has a built in magnetic clasp, but this time around I decided to just use the supplies I had on hand. When I am finished with the necklace I always use jewelry glue to add extra security to the knot. Before I add the glue, I always cut off the excess wire so it is not hanging out.

Step Two: Gather The Beading Supplies

Here I have gathered the shell and white acrylic beads I will be using for this project.
Here I have gathered the shell and white acrylic beads I will be using for this project.

For this project I decided to use white acrylic beads and a shell. Acrylic beads are easy to use because they have the look of glass, but without the worry of chipping or breaking. If you prefer you could use more expensive beads, but the idea behind this project is to keep the cost low. I did not spend more than five dollars in making this necklace, but with the compliments I have received people thought I spent much more than that. Do not be fooled into thinking that necklaces at department stores necessarily use more expensive beads just because a bracelet is twenty plus dollars. The other day I saw a necklace at Macy's made out of acrylic beads, but the price was around twenty-five dollars! Adjust the materials and prices to your liking, but fashion does not require a large amount of cash.

Step Three: Use A Pattern For Stringing Beads On The Necklace

For my pattern I alternated fake pearls and clear beads, going from smallest to largest beads. However, create any pattern you like, or just randomly place the beads on the wire! This necklace will be your creation!
For my pattern I alternated fake pearls and clear beads, going from smallest to largest beads. However, create any pattern you like, or just randomly place the beads on the wire! This necklace will be your creation!

My pattern consisted of alternating fake pearl beads with clear/whitish beads. I started off with the small beads and worked up towards having the larger beads towards the center of the necklace. This pattern creates symmetry and balance in the piece of jewelry.

Step Four: Put The Shell On The Necklace

Place the shell in the center of the necklace.
Place the shell in the center of the necklace.

Once you have reached the center point slide the shell onto the necklace. Make sure to continue to shape the wire as you slide beads on the necklace.

Step Five: Continue The Pattern

Make the same pattern on the other side of the necklace.
Make the same pattern on the other side of the necklace.

For symmetry, make sure to duplicate the same pattern on both sides of the necklace. However, you can deviate from the pattern if you are going for an asymmetrical look! Once you have reached the end, knot the beading wire onto the necklace clasp. I used jewelry glue to secure the ends and allowed the necklace to dry for a couple of days.

Wearing The Necklace

Here I am wearing the necklace. I edited the photo with sepia colors to give this photograph a nostalgic feel.

How To Make The Bracelet

Notice how the larger beads are in the center.
Notice how the larger beads are in the center.

For the bracelet I simply used the white acrylic beads and strung these onto a piece of stretch magic. Stretch magic is my go to stretchy cord for making all of my bracelets, plus I love how this product is made in the United States. The acrylic beads and the beading wire were also made in the United States, so this is a project contains several supplies that help American workers. The shell was not made in the United States, but the one thing I like about beading supplies is that it is still easy to find products that are made in America. If I love a package of beads made in another country I will still buy it, but I try to support American workers when I can. Watch the Google video below for more tips on how to make this simple bracelet. Notice how I used the larger beads in the center to give the bracelet a fun and balanced look. Have fun making your own jewelry and happy crafting!

Your demonstration video was very helpful Sweetie Pie. It cleared some snags and now i know roughly how to make my own. Its quite easy actually once you try it for a few times. The difficult part was the arranging of the beads but once that's done the rest is a breeze. With the pop up card and now the jewellery This Valentine's Day is really going to be fun and special. Its very romantic and personal when you make the gifts from your own hands for your love ones. Thank you so much Sweetie Pie. I learned so much from you and i'm really grateful. God Bless You

Ripplemaker,

Sure I would be happy to make your a necklace :). You are so sweet, so just let me know. Thanks for the comments.

Agvulpes,

Thanks for the comments and I hope you have fun making a necklace for you wife.

Ashwinspga,

You are so sweet and thanks for the great comments. I think a great hub for you to make would be ideas for Valentines Day and making that several months in advance means it will be around all year for traffic. My Valentine's Day hub I made last year does not get a large amount of traffic around this time of year, but come February it will pick up again.

G-ma,

Thanks for your sweet comments and I always appreciate these. Perhaps you could make some jewelry hubs of your own one day?

Compu-smart,

Did you have any luck finding that neckbrace :).

Indrani,

Thanks for the lovely comments and I truly appreciate these.

weblog,

I always appreciate your suggestions on tags and I shall do that. Thanks for looking out for me :).

Zsuzsy Bee,

Thanks for the comments. I always appreciate it when you stop by :).

I have an artistic side, and per the suggestions of my mom I am trying to get back into beading and art work again. My hub addiction has taken me from this somewhat, but I am trying to get back into it. I am sure you can make a beautiful necklace once you try. Thanks for commenting Marisue :).

thanks so much for this .I will go and get some jewelry glue.I do the crimping beads. When I first started out ,I was tying, but that didn't work out too good.I gave necklaces to everybody last Christmas.

At first,I just wanted some nice rings, now I have enough beads to make jewelry for the next ten years but I also like to draw and read ,so the beads are lonely and waiting for me to find them again.I like what that lady said about ripping your necklace off your neck,I just think it's kind of mean :) and that is the utmost compliment.Your jewelry is pretty though :0 , :0 , :)

God Bless,

cheryl

SweetiePie,

It looks like you have motivated many with your creative hubs on jewelry making. I hope you keep it up with your artwork. I know it is hard to balance both writing and artwork, I am trying to set up a routine for myself now and want to include both. Thumbs Up!

Hi C.S. Alexis,

I think I should spend more time on art work, but I was excited yesterday because I got to decorate a book bag for the kids room. The librarian needed some bags for the upcoming family day displays, so I told her I would make more if she likes. I think it turned out nice, even if no one else liked it :).
