How Often Do I Read The Bible?
69
How often I read the Bible usually depends on what is going on in my life. When I was sixteen I read the Bible in one entire year following a program from a daily calendar. In college I took religious studies courses about the history of Judaism and Christianity, which required me to read the Bible each day. For this class I also read the Bible in conjunction with scholarly journals about Biblical Studies as research for paper writing. Many people were very upset with our professor because she said the Bible was written by man. Many Christian students in my classes criticized the professor, but they should not do this because the law clearly states the Bible cannot be taught from a religious perspective at public universities. There are many private college in Southern California that teach the Bible from a Christian perspective and I would suggest taking courses at these institutions if that is what you are looking for. My professor was brave enough to share with the class that even though she is not a Christian, she still believed that the writers of the Bible were inspired by a higher power. This professor struck me as a very fair and accepting of many different viewpoints regarding the Bible, which I felt was a great quality for a teacher and is one of the reasons her classes were my favorite in college. I enjoyed reading the Bible from a research perspective, but today I enjoy reading the Bible for my own personal inspiration.

Since I decided to write this hub I will share with you yes I am a Christian and this is a powerful belief in my life. However, I will not be getting into any religious debates or tell you what to believe. I do not claim to be a scientist or a Bible expert, I am merely sharing a few passages from the Bible that bring me comfort in times of need. I do not read the Bible daily, but I read it every few days and sometimes just when I feel the need for strength and counsel. I prefer individual Bible study over many church sermons that do not touch on the Bible as much as I would like.
The non-denominational church that I attend from time to time bases many of its sermons around Bible passages, which I found to be inspiring and uplifting. As a teenager I was very touched by a youth group I attended at a non-denominational church and this experience changed the way I looked at Christianity. Many Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists, and members of other denominations attended this church because of its ecumenical mindset, which states that all Christians should work together to achieve a spiritual brotherhood. I enjoyed this church because there were people from many different denominations that were able to get along and not let doctrines get in the way of fellowship and studying the Bible. Our youth group activities revolved around studying a different Bible verse weekly, which was a great thing because many of us had different viewpoints and we were encouraged to share even if someone did not agree. Our main focus was studying the Bible and to me that is what true fellowship is all about. This is a church where I felt everyone was loved and respected, which is not something I could say about every church.
Even though I am a Christian I would never tell anyone what to believe because you must decide that for yourselves. However, I feel I can attend any church and talk to any Christian because we all have the same belief in the Bible and I choose to look past doctrinal differences. I am happy to say the Bible is a place where I can find solace when I have a question and need an answer.
The Lord Is My Sheperd
The Twenty-Third Psalm
The Lord is My Shepherd known as the Twenty-third Psalm is my favorite because of the beautiful imagery. One of my best friend's also loves it because her grandpa used to read this Psalm every day before he passed away. I like to think of verse 23:2:
He makes me lay down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.
This eidetic scene is serene and calming to think about during stressful moments of the day. I can imagine lying in a green pasture next to still water and then nothing seems very stressful anymore. I love the idea of God leading me with his symbolic staff when I am feeling down or sad. Just as many people have a favorite song or movie that cheers them up, I like to read the Twenty-Third Psalm when I am melancholy.
Funny Video With A Guy Using The Song Of Solomon For Pick-up Lines. At Least He Is Creative
The Song of Solomon
Many Biblical scholars argue that the Song of Solomon is just erotic love poetry, but I believe it is much more than that. The purpose of this book to is to show mankind that sex is not the dirty thing that the Puritans of Salem would have you believe, and even behind closed doors they were hypocrites about this issue. People in love and a committed relationship such as marriage should be able to express their feelings towards each other, and the Song of Solomon shows that is something that is not dirty or shameful.

The Bible Banned At School
Religion should not be taught at school, but students should be allowed to pray or read the Bible, Koran, or the other holy texts during free times such as lunch. Sometimes separation of church and state goes way too far and children are not allowed to read the Bible at school, which means these students do not have equal rights with others. Here are a couple of stories that discuss this issue:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/02/AR2006100201238.html
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=56841
As long as children are not preaching the Bible and just reading silently during lunch, how does this hurt anyone? All students should be guaranteed the right to peruse religious texts of their choice during free times such as lunch and recess. Some schools have even allowed children to read the Bible during free choice silent reading, and to me this makes sense because this is a time when students are supposed to be able to read books of their choosing. We can encourage literacy by allowing children to read what they like and this freedom should not be curtailed. The separation of church and state should not take away a child's freedom to read the Bible at school.

I haven't read all the hub but I have one thing to :
if you don't know hebrew then you have NEVER read the bible! you may read some devious translations but NEVER the bible!
I know hebrew so I can see it in my eyes
Thank you pjdscott and I have to say I like the Irish attitude about this issue. In some parts of America people will jump up and down if you even mention the Bible in public. Once there was a group at college passing out free Bibles and people were cursing and throwing food at them. Some students even took the Bibles just so they could throw them on the restroom floor. I do not impose my views on anyone, but this also means people should not show disrespect for someone reading the Bible in public. Thanks for sharing.
Nice Hub. One thing people never seem to consider is; yes the Bible, was written by man, but these men were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write, the Bible
Something, else that stricks me, is that, people believe in Darwins' therory, but they never voice concern that he was a man. A man with no devine foundation with which to support his imaginational account for the reason; we are here.
Well like you said no debating, I'll honor that. And simply say again; nice HUb.
Roland,
You are welcome to express opposing viewpoints, I just will not moderate arguments between posters. So please feel free to post any more points you have. Great post and thanks for sharing.
Daily reading of the Bible is not only enriching, but often revealing. I can read the same passage on different days and learn new insight. Thanks for sharing your story. BTW: That video on SOS was hilarious!
Rob,
Thanks for commenting and yes that video was very funny. I think the first pick- up line that kid used worked well, but after that it was just a up-hill battle. He should have just kept using the first line. Ladies, you better read the Song of Solomon tonight to make sure that guy are not trying to use these pick-up line on you LOL.
I reckon I lost the touch long time ago
Thank you for commenting jacobworld.
I agree with Rob. One must read daily and even readin the same verse over and over will gain a little more insight or even a differnt insight than before.
Sweetie...great post!....Why is it that people can not post on here about the Bible or God without inviting the nonbelievers to come crash the party?...You don't have to preface your hub with any stipulations..just wright sister..like nobodys watching...opps thats dance like nobpdys watching...welll anyway great HUb once again
SirDent,
You are truly an inspiration to me and I appreciate you posting here :). I always enjoy reading your hubs about the Bible, these are great!
Funnebone,
In the future I will openly post about my beliefs, I just felt a little gun shy after a couple people came and posted "There is too much religion going on here!" However, you are right, we should not let those people dictate what we write. Thanks for the great encouragement, I appreciate it!
Thank you for this hub SweetiePie. You should be writing whatever you feel and never worry about what the world thinks as long as you are not raunchy with it. There is always a proper way to express anything you want without lowering yourself to trash. I am happy to hear that you are going OPEN. Good job! The bible rocks!

C.S. Alexis,
Thank you for the encouraging words and I agree, The Bible is cool!
Nice hub
If I was still single I might try some of those pickup lines lol
You are right about the Bible being a great work of literature no matter how you view the authorship.
Well done on making it through Leviticus and Numbers at such a young age ;)
Thanks for commenting again PetMemorialWorld. I agree no matter whether you view the Bible as being authored by man or by God that there is not denying that it is a great piece of literature and faith. The reason I was so motivated to read the Bible at such a young age was because I attended a youth group that encouraged us to read the Bible on our own so we could draw our own conclusions. Thanks for visiting once again :).
Good article and don't worry about what anyone thinks. With my first name being Priest you can imagine I've heard them all. Just tell em to piss off if they really bother you or sometimes the only language a few people speak is swift and blinding violence LOL haha.. jk
...kinda
PLM you are too cool..you climb towers and you have a cool first name...man...that is great!
Thanks PLM and Funnebone.
SweetiePie,
It seems like we all agree (except Dan), good hub. Unleash. Don't be afraid, just let it rip.
BTW- I wonder if Dan reads Aramaic and Greek too? LOL He must really get offended when he reads how the Holy Ghost chose to speak in every mans native tongue on the day of Pentecost. LOL
Talford,
I think the difference between the rest of us and Dan is he is Jewish and most of us seem to have a Christian perspective. I am not sure if Dan is Jewish, but I looked up his IP address and it said he was from Israel, so I am thinking that and his comment lead me to believe that he is. Yeah I think this entire hub made him upset because he wants us to think only people who can read Hebrew can ever have the true knowledge of the Bible. This is tantamont to saying only English speakers can read A Tale of Two Cities, which has been translated into many languages and all those people can comprehend it! That type of narrow minded thinking prevented the Bible from being translated into local languages for centuries and it is just silly. Thanks for sharing your insights and stopping by.
I enjoyed your hub immensly sweetie pie! So glad you put this together and the point you made about the puritans, sex and the Song of Solomon....
I agree with you about Bible reading in school..kids talking about/sharing their faith should even be allowed - freedom of speech - as long as it occurs so that it doesn't conflict w/teaching time (ex. before and after class, lunch etc).
Regarding Dan and what he espoused, may I encourage you to remember to pray for the peace of Israel. We are to bless Israel! I know this is probably confusing to to many and infuriating to others but He IS and WE TOO ARE - Israel! We have been grafted in and share in the inheritance, thanks be to Jesus! (For Reference, see Rom 9 - 11).
I pray for Israel and everyone. However, I also pray for people in the Middle East and everywhere else whether they be Muslim, Christians, or Jews. There are many good people in Muslim majority countries and in Israel, and I wish they would stop fighting. Without making this a political discussion, I think Israel and all Middle Eastern countries should work towards peace becuase neither is superior to one or the other. My comment was merely to point out to those who wondered about Dan's comments why he was critiquing the Bible, so I was just pointing out it is because he was not Christian. I would imagine anyone who is not Christian would do the same thing. Thanks for commenting.
Hi again Sweetie Pie -
I'm glad to hear you pray for everyone, which I believe is what all should do in response to what the Scriptures say.... I agree it would be nice if there was peace in that region (as well as throughout all the earth!). I also agree that we are to treat others equally, that there isn't one people group or country which is superior to another. I do know however, again based on scripture, that Israel is not to give up more land "in the name of peace." I know you didn't want this to become a political discussion and I don't want others to think I have hostile feelings towards Dan - I am a huge supporter of Israel and I know firsthand there are Arabs and Jews who currently reside together peacefully in that land, which is how it should be (it's not impossible).
Thanks for adding these wonderful scriptures and insights. I appreciate it and I did not think you had hostile feelings towards Dan, it was quite the contrary. I just did not want anyone to think I felt bad towards him, so I was clarifying.
I read it pretty often myself. I should read it daily but reading isn't always where it's at. Sometimes it is meditating on what you read for days at tiems that helps rto bring understanding of God's Word.
Thanks for the comments SirDent! I always appreciate your insights in to Bible matters!
I enjoyed this page very much and I am glad I stumbled across it today. I read the Bible every morning for about 30 minutes before I do anything else—except make coffee.
ps Dan should know the New Testament was written in Greek from the get-go.
I am kina late. :-). I love the hub. I read the Bible daily since I was about 12. I was persecuted for it. It is my bread. An exception I did not read the Bible was when I was back-slided. But Lord forgave me. When I was away from the Lord it was my time of misery.
Now, New Testament is available in Hebrew I just receive copy from Jerusalem. It is entire Bible in Hebrew. I love and pray for Israel and God will continue proceeding His plan with Israel. I was there but it was long time ago. I have to go back I think. The picture you see is sunrise over the Dead Sea. See even Dead Sea needs the light.
No matter what I love Dan.
Love ya all.
I try not to get into political discussions regarding the Bible and future events. My belief is the Bible was written and meant to be translated into the languages that people speak today, and there is no need to read the Old Testament in ancinet Hebrew, or the New Testament in ancient Greek. Personally I do not believe in the Zionists interpretations of the Bible regarding Israel and the like.
Great work needs to be done in the Middle East peace process, and this is beyond the scope of religion. One can have their faith and not necessarily have to visit Israel. I am very free thinking in my belief system, and I use the Bible to give me strength. I just had to clarify my thoughts on this comment.

Like you, I come from a Christian background and a country where Christianity is very important (Ireland). I used to read the Bible once a day but have since lapsed. Your hub has inspired me to read it again, thank you most sincerely.
