‘Thank you’ – two words that can mean a lot to so many people.

Thank you may mean a simple gesture of appreciation. It can also convey feelings of happiness and wonder to the other person. Saying thank you may also mean that the speaker will always remember what the receiver (of the words) had done for him / her. Thank you can also give the receiver of these words the feeling like he or she is on top of the world. Whether the words are complete (thank you) or just simple thanks or ‘Tnx’ or ‘TY’ (as we sometimes use here), these two words can pack a lot of punch and bring out a lot of smiles from the young and old alike.

In honor of the words “thank you”, giving thanks and the occasion of the Thanksgiving Day (in the US), I have compiled a list of how to say thank you in various languages. Hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed compiling them and trying to say them out loud.

Thank You in Four Languages

Filipino / Tagalog – Salamat

Filipino / Ilocano – Agyamanak

Chinese (Mandarin) – Xie Xie or Xie’ Xie’ Ni

Chinese (Hokkien – Taiwan) – Kam Sia

Africa – dankie

German – Danke (Dahnk-uh)

Danish – Tak

Dutch – Dank U

Hawaiian – Mahalo

Greek – Efxaristo / Efharisto

Hebrew – Toda

Irish – Go raibh maith agat (for one person); Go raibh maith agaibh (for many persons)

Thai – khob-kun-ka (if the speaker is a woman); khob-kun-krub

Bahasa Indonesia / Malay – Terima Kasih

Korean – gahm-sah-hahm-ni-da

Russian – spasiba

Swahili – Asante

Laos – Khwap jai / Khob chai lai lai

Welsh – diolch

Scottish Gaelic – Tapadh Leat

Vietnamese - Cám ơn

Welsh – Diolch

Slovak – Dakujem

Serbian – Svala

Here are more ways to say thank you, courtesy of some of my favorite hubbers:

Hungarian – Köszönöm

Hindi (an Indian language) – Dhanyavad or Sukriya

Northern Ireland – Cheers Mate

Javanese (Central Java - Indonesia) - matur nuwun

Sundanese (West Java - Indonesia) - hatur nuhun

Welsh - Diolch

And that’s it. There are more, lots more. But I limited the translations to just thirty. If you speak another language and have a different version of the words ‘thank you’, why not leave me a note below and I’ll update my list? Ciao and cheers!

Note: Although care has been taken to ensure that the translations above are accurate, some errors may have occurred unknown to this writer. Please feel free to correct me if you see any such errors. Thank you.

Hi emievil,

Now I have something to teach my kids...thank you in various languages. We might integrate this lesson in our nightly gratitude ritual. You might want to check out my very first hub http://hubpages.com/hub/Thanksgiving-Every-Day, which is related to this topic on thankfulness. Salamat ng marami. ;-)
