How to Wear High Heels

When it comes to looking stylish and glamorous, nothing beats a pair of high heels. High heels work wonders for a woman’s figure, they make the feet appear smaller and the legs look longer with lower leg muscles more defined.  Overall they make a woman look slimmer, altering her posture, flexing the calf muscles, tucking in the tummy, lifting the bottom, and making the bust and buttocks more prominent.   High heels also alter a woman’s walk making hips sway and hypnotizing any male following her curves, so making a woman look sexy and confident.

Worn properly, high heels are one of the best arms a woman has regarding accessories to seduce a man.  After all it is a rare man that is not charmed by a pair of long legs wearing the most audacious high heels.

My favourite Red shoes

Unfortunately many women find high heels very painful and choose not to benefit from this arm of seduction.   What can I say… high heels are not really meant to be comfortable, if you are after comfort I suggest you go and look for your Birkenstocks and follow The American Podiatric Medical Association’s advice to get rid of any shoes that cause discomfort.  But if you are like me and cannot live without your high heels, you need strategies to help you make your heels more comfortable.

Tips to wear high heels comfortably.

1. Buy the right size. How many times have you bought a pair of shoes in the wrong size just because you liked the shoe and your size was not available? I am guilty of this myself, I have several pairs that are either too small or too big but I wear anyway because they are gorgeous! But not wearing the right size has a price in comfort, so my advice –which I’ve started to follow myself- is never buy shoes that are not your size, even if they are the latest Louboutin’s at half prize!

2. Wear the right size. You might think that you know what size you are but what you probably don’t know is that feet grow larger as we get older, they swell in the heat and during pregnancy and the thickness of your feet also varies with your weight fluctuations. A shoe that fitted like a glove two summers ago might not be suitable this year because your weight has changed or you have been pregnant.

3. Try before buying. Whenever possible try the shoes before you buy them. Sometimes, the shoe might be the right size or the right width but it might not offer enough support to walk confidently. When you are trying for size, walk around with the shoes as you would normally walk and even try a few dance steps if you are going to wear them to a party.

4. Stick to round toes. Pointy-toed shoes push your big toe inward, causing joint pain, crunched toes, and even the beginnings of bunions. That is why it is better to choose round-toed shoes which allow your toes to lie flat and spread out naturally.

5. Alternate shoe styles. To avoid your feet crunching into one weird shape wear different types of shoes; alternate round-toed shoes with pointy-toed shoes, stiletto heels with platforms and so on. Allow your feet to recover their natural shape this way.

6. Walk barefooted. Whenever you can, walk barefoot at home to allow your feet to recover their natural shape and arch.

7. Don't go too high. Podiatrists agree that a shorter heel of one-to-two inches is a good choice for comfort and foot health. Avoid three or four-inch heels, which put undue pressure on the ball and frontal bones of your foot. Kitten heels always look sexy; you don’t need to wear stilettos every day to look and feel sexy.

8. Vary the height of your heels. The more you vary the height of the heels you are wearing, the better for your feet. Different heights put pressure and exercise different muscles and nerves in your foot.

9. Tailor your width. Make sure the width of your shoe matches the width of your foot.

How to Walk in High Heels Stilettos

10.  Cushion up right under the ball of your foot.  Cushioning will help your feet stay comfy. If your shoes don't have enough cushioning, consider adding some with a shoe insert.

11.  Always wear your new shoes at home at least once before you wear them for going out.

12.  Exercise your feet before and after wearing your high heels

13.  Put your feet up.  After a day wearing high heels put your feet up to allow better blood circulation.

14.  Take care of your feet.  Having healthy feet with no callouses, ingrown nails or any disease will make it easier to stand on your heels all day long.

15.  If you are planning to stand up or walk for a prolonged time with your high heels, take two pairs and exchange them in the middle of your day.  Changing shoes of different heights and cuts will allow your feet to have a rest without having to opt out of the glamour of wearing your high heels.

Excellent hub. I have never worn high heels...unless you include platform shoes in the 70s :) I have admiration for those who can wear them well.

Uninvited Writer: I cannot go one day without them, I even have high heeled flip flops for the swimming pool, not to mention my kitten heel slippers @_@

ethel: I am sure you bring them back every now and again for that special occasion.

blondepoet: I try whenever is possible to use my own photos, the ones above are just some of my favourite shoes.

Personally I think ladies in high heels are quite pleasant to see, particularly when they wear them on their feet. ;)

But seriously, I heard just yesterday, that there is a movement to ban high-heels in England for safety reasons, I believe it is because too many women fall down in them or get them caught in a sidewalk thingy...so England says ban them.

England is going too far, in my opinion, under it's new government, intruding into the lives of it's citizens, and high heels are just another example.

If ladies wish to take the risk of wearing them then let them. It's their right.

woody, that is so ridiculous! I believe I heard something like that before but I am sure it is some kind of joke. Surely it cannot be taken seriously.

I love watching beautiful girls in high heals. It adds to the beauty. But it looks awkward when a girl wearing high-heels cannot carry it. I thing to carry a high heel you need a suitable figure. It doesn't suits everyone. Am I right?

Princessa profile image

Princessa  says:

hi guidebaba, it is not that high heels don't suit everybody. A woman just needs to choose the most appropiate ones to suit her silhouette.

The problem is that there are many women who don't know how to walk on high heels and they look awkward wearing them.

I'm like UW. I don't like wearing heels and only wear them when there's a special occasion. Even then, I would worry that I'll just fall flat on my face when I walk on shoes with heels! But I do admire those who can wear high heels (the higher the better), they make the legs look longer and sexier. =)

Nice hub, and I have to admit that your shoes look really nice on you, but personally I'm with the American Podiatric Medical Association! (Oh, not literally, I just mean that I agree with them, lol!)

I wear high(ish) heels only on very special occasions, but my walking turns very unnatural and clompy, and I have to make sure that I'm never too far from a wall or some furniture, in case I need some support..

I live in England by the way, but I haven't heard of this idea to ban high heels, and despite my own personal horror of wearing them I wouldn't support it as what one wears is nobody else's business. :)

emievil: high heels are easier to wear than what most people think. It is all about practice.

Moon Daisy: I read about the British wanting to ban high heels because they claim two million days a year are lost through ailments caused by dodgy shoes. I could not believe it but here is the link to The Sun article: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2573994/

The Daily Mail also reported that UK-based Trade Union Congress has called for a ban on high heels in the workplace. Crazy isn't it?

Paul: I like uour motto :)

Wonderful hub about wearing heels. It is important that your shoes be as comfortable as possible. So providing guidance in selecting a high heel shoe that is right is a step in the right direction.

I read this hub a while back but forgot to comment! :)

It's wonderful, well written and helpful lol... coming from a girl who can't stand anything on her feet but flip flops this helped me out a LOT lol! ^_^

Sorry I can't join anymore hubmobs for a while, they are so much fun, I hope your starting to feel better dear. & btw, don't worry, I have something on Monday that's supposed to help my hands, it's nothing "too" bad yet, just have trouble typing a lot. ^_~ Take care darling.

cool hub....thanks for your tips.....however another point would be you must find the right material types of high heel shoes....Go for soft type fabric of high heel shoe and it wont cause painful for your feet...although it will cost you a little bit, but the result will be very satisfying...trust me:)

Great Hub! I love the info about walking correctly in heels. It's so important. You also look pretty silly when you don't. :)

lindagoffigan profile image

lindagoffigan  says:

Nice Hub. The average high heel used to be three inches and now heel's average height is four inches. I purchased a few pairs and they are beautiful but I always have to remember to walk on the heel first and then the toe and if you walk slow enough, you will get to your destination. A lot of thoughts have to be considered when walking in four inch heels.

So the four inch heels are in my closets while the three inch and lower gets worn more often. If the occasion is really special, then I will walk in the four inch heel as each step would be worth it.

Flexy profile image

Flexy  says:

I don't get it. Tip #7 says to stick to heels that are one to two inches and avoid wearing anything higher. So what you're saying in "How to Wear High Heels" is NOT to wear them?

Ellen Graeger  says:

I loved this article. We sometimes forget that we are WOMEN. Yes, thank you. Lovely shoes. I'll go tomorrow and have a look - some fancy high heels might be the motivation.

Princessa profile image

Princessa  says:

lindagoffigan: After a long time wearing high heels, mastering to walk on them becomes automatic. In fact, I actually have trouble when I have to wear flat shoes LOL

Hi flexy: I mean that IDEALLY, for the sake of your feet, for everyday use you should stick to small heels and reserve your high heels for special situations, or at least alternate very high heels with small ones.

Ellen: For me high heels are an essential part of being feminine.

Am I the only male in this group who wears high heels? I love them and you are right with practice and the right size it is not that hard to wear them. I foung that when I bought 2" platforms with 6" heels I learned to walk with a more feminine gait. You must take smaller steps in platforms. I wear them, I love them and I love letting my feminine side out when ever I can

wearing jeans with heels, how far down the heel should the hem come to ?

Princessa profile image

Princessa  says:

creativeone59: Thanks for your comment.

thihigh: It really depends on the jeans you are wearing, the effect you want to achieve and the type of shoes you are matching your jeans with. For example, a bootcut jean would look better covering your heels and just showing the front part of the shoe while a skinny cut jean looks better if it finishes around your ankle bone so you show the whole shoe.
