How to make firefox more secure

Firefox is one of the best browsers currently available for windows ( and also for linux).

It's agreed that its a lot safer than Internet Explorer where vulnerabilities are concerned, but as it's popularity has increased in recent years, so have its vulnerablilties. Although critical patches are often available through automatic updates, theres also some things you can do to increase its security.

One of the best things about firefox is the availability of add-ons ( prevously known as extensions) to add features to the browser. Along with some very useful ones, theres also some that increase the security of your web browsing experience and make FireFox more secure.

- NoScript

NoScript is an add-on which automatically blocks Javascript and Java from running on sites you visit. As its possible for someone to use hidden Javascript or Java on web sites that you surf to as a way of infecting your computer with adware, spyware, trojans or attempt to phish your password or other details. Therefore NoScript is a very good thing indeed!

You can approve known "safe" sites that you regularly use by adding them to a whitelist, this means they'll remain fully functional as before. This whitelist "guilty until proven innocent" approach dramatically increases your security online as it rules out a lot of potential vulnerabilities. It also can block Flash and other plugins, allowing them to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank), and provides the most powerful Anti-XSS protection available in a browser.

- Firekeeper

Firekeeper is an add-on for the Firefox browser and it aims to protect your from malicious websites which may exploit browser and code security flaws. It keeps your Internet-browsing session safe by performing as an Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) system at the browser level.

It does so by using rules found in the open-source IDP tool Snort. Snort is an open source network intrusion prevention and detection system which, according to the snort website, “has become the de facto standard for the industry.”Features of Firekeeper include the ability to scan, detect and deny malicious webpages that you may unwittingly try to connect to. It also supports a blacklist and whitelist.

- Keyscrambler

Keyscrambler is a FireFox Add-on that protects your passwords from being detected by keyloggers (malicious programs, usually "trojans" which attempt to steal your passwords by logging keystrokes)

If you're unfortunate enough to have a keylogger on your computer, it won't see the real keystrokes you type into webpages when you're logging into email sites, etc. Instead it will only see randomly generated keystrokes.

To guard against the installation of spyware/adware, I recommend using Spywareblaster. This also blocks a lot of spyware in Internet Explorer.

  • EssentialPIM: Personal Information Manager

EssentialPIM is another PIM program (Personal Information Manager in case you didn't know what that meant!) These things are very useful for not having to remember 100 various things such as birthdays, meetings, appointments, to-do lists etc. You can easily make a note of something you have to do in three months time that you might otherwise forget by then. It has colour coded day, week, and month schedules. You can import (and export) from a whole bunch of other software such as Outlook, Outlook Express, and Google Calendar. You can even sync it with Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone devices, if your lucky enough to have one of those! It’s pretty detailed and feature packed with an easy to follow layout and some useful features such as to-do list, contacts manager and more. I’d recommend checking it out to anyone who wants to be more productive or simply has a bad memory! There’s a free version and a paid version. What’s the difference? • Naomi: Free Parental Internet Filter

Naomi doesn’t rely on a list of disallowed websites like a lot of similiar software does. Instead it examines in real time, all the data being sent and received through the Internet application, such as web browsers and chat programs. Monitoring iisn't limited to web sites, but also covers the whole local Internet traffic. It also allows blocking of file-sharing programs and the entire thing can be password-protected. It’s also got some useful plugins that may be of use, such as one to block Myspace access and one to hide the tray icon. It's worth checking out if you’ve been looking for a free way of protecting your kids online life. You can read more info and the free download from here.Software reviews of freeware software, shareware software, and web apps to help you get the most from using your computer! http://yourcomputer.blogspot.com/

  • aMSN: Don’t shoot the messenger!

This is a free open-source MSN Messenger clone called aMSN. If for any reason you want to use MSN messenger but without using the official MSN messenger client, then maybe its time to check this out. It does just about everything the official MSN messenger program does, plus some more, such as being able to sign into more than one account at a time. It supports display pictures, custom emoticons, file transfer, even webcam support. When you read the list of features, you’ll see its virtually identical to the official client in every way, but one potentially useful thing is that you can download plug-ins from the site, as well as this, its also skinnable. You can check out all the features in full and download it by going here.Software reviews of freeware software, shareware software, and web apps to help you get the most from using your computer! http://yourcomputer.blogspot.com/
