Hubpages URL Trackers

What are URL Trackers?

http://hubpages.com/profile/jimmythejock This is a link to my profile page on Hubpages if you click on it, it will obviously lead you to my profile page.

http://hubpages.com/_jtj/profile/jimmythejock This is also a link to my profile page on Hubpages and if you click on it, it will also lead you to my profile page on Hubpages.

As you can see there is a subtle difference between the two links above and that is simply because the second of the links contains one of my Hubpages URL Trackers.

Although both links do the same Job in Directing visitors to my profile page on Hubpages the link with the URL Tracker can lead to me making extra money from my Hubpages affiliate advertisers.

Hubpages Rewards

The Basic Idea of Hubpages URL Trackers

URL Trackers are the Hubpages way of rewarding Authors who bring new Authors to Hubpages.

Without URL Tracker

If you post a link to one of your Hubs somewhere on the Internet and someone clicks on it and then that person decides that they would like to write on Hubpages, they sign up and begin writing hubs, they will soon begin earning money from Google, Amazon, Ebay and Kontera and you will recieve nothing of that.

With URL Tracker

If you post a link on the Internet with your URL Tracker added to it then when the person signs up and starts making money from the four advertising affiliates above, because they used your Tracker to sign up to Hubpages you will be rewarded with 10% of that persons earnings from each of the affiliates.

Creating a URL Tracker

As a member of Hubpages you are automatically assigned a default URL Tracker which you can find if you are signed in to your Hubpages account.

To find your default tracker log into Hubpages then click on My Account and then click on the URL Trackers link (circled in the picture).

Your default tracker will be a mix of numbers and letters but if you prefer you can make your own Trackers which can help you to determine which ones are performing best for you. instructions of how to create your own URL Trackers are also found on the URL Trackers page, Instructions on linking your trackers to your hubs or profile page can also be found there.

Using Your URL Trackers

Now that you have set up and created some Trackers how and where do you use them?

You can use your trackers anywhere on the Internet where you are an active participant with a profile, Facebook, Bebo, Twitter, social networking sites and forums, If you have a blog you can post links there or you can even post them in your Hubs or Hubpages profile pages. trackers work at their best if you include a description of where the link leads to.

For example if you are directing someone to the Hubpages home page you could write something like this.

I write on a fantastic website called Hubapges.com which has some great tools that make it simple to publish great looking professional pages and the bonus is that I get paid for it, why not give it a try sign up here it's totally free. http://hubpages.com/_jtj.

Remember you can link to any hub not just your own, all you do is add your URL Tracker.

The Benefit of Multiple Trackers

Having one URL Tracker keeps it simple, you know if you are getting referrals from it but on the downside you have no way of knowing where those refferals are coming from.

if you have an account on facebook you could create a tracker to see if people are signing up to hubpages from your account there.

Bebo a different tracker, and so on.

Having multiple trackers helps you to determine where your refferals are coming from which in turn lets you know which of your campaigns are working best.

URL Trackers give you 10% of the earnings of users who sign up using your trackers, using them properly could prove to be very rewarding indeed.

Hi Jimmy - this is so true - I now have 8 or so url trackers and it is interesting to see where visitors come from. With twitter and FaceBook in particular I re-send any links about 3 times a the day to take in all time zones - this simple act increased my visitors from those sites. Great advice here.

Hey jimmy, I have a question. I have built this tracker and put it in the links to other hubs that I have given on my latest hub about antivirus reviews and fast computers. Now, the hub views from the tracker have been growing steadily. The thing is, I do not as of now, have an Adsense account. So will that hub traffic help me any ways???

Hi Jimmy, Thanks for the good idea, it makes sense if you are going to put a link out there why not get the full benefits.

Sincerely,

So, what about if there is no signup but someone uses my link with the tracker to another hub and then shops on say any of these; Google, Ebay, amazon ??

Thanks so much for answering this request Jimmy. Ten minutes ago I was clueless about trackers. Now I actually understand how they work. Maybe I should have just spent time researching this by actually clicking the URL trackers link and reading the page about trackers but I am such a techno clutz and I knew you would explain it in a way even I could understand!

Very clever Jimmy. I see what you're doing. Now when people read your hub and possibly click the link with your tracker in it, you'll get even more money if they earn anything. Sneaky!

Abhishek, in order to receive a benefit from the referrals you would need to have accounts with the various affiliates. Since HP doesn't pay you directly, it isn't as simple as receiving a 10% "cut" of someones earnings. The way it actually works is that your adID with the respective affiliates would register 10% of the time during the referees' impressions.

Thanks for the insight. If it is something that we are doing anyway we might as well get paid for it. Good, clean and to the point! Thanks Gary Rust

I just love the format of the trackers here at hubpages, they look so simple and if you spread your trackers far and wide then you could potentially benefit your own efforts combined through others and this is what is so great about the Hubpages system....now I must get back to writing more hubpages when the time allows!!!

Jimmy, thank you for explaining an important element of how Hubpages works. Although I've been a member for a year, I'm new to writing for HubPages, so I did not know about how URL trackers work. In my first five Hubs, I was linking to other Hubs WITHOUT my URL tracker.

Can I use just any word as a URL tracker? Or should it be a unique ID, one that no one else is using yet? If I want to use fb for all the links posted on facebook _fb/myhub, I suppose there must be many people already using that as a URL tracker?

Can you use the tracker that has link to this page, and if so, do you still get the 10% if they sign up. I would love to see an example of the link I can make myself to see where my code goes.

I find that a little confusing because it doesnt show where to numbers are placed!

Thanks Marty

Hi Jimmy, my goodness, it has taken me forever to figure out how to set this up. I can't tell you how many times I have been to, and then left hubpages because I was so frustrated with myself not being able to get it!

Now I come back and read your page once and the light just came on LOL. Thanks so much, you have been a great help to me.

Sincerely,

Kerry
