How to know if your baby is allergic to milk
The signs, the symptoms
Depending on the method of feeding, the results of your observations may or may not affect your diet directly, Mom! Regardless, adjustments may need to be made for your baby's diet if you find any of the following present:
- Unexplained fussiness (babies are generally happy unless something is going on - not to say it's anyone's fault, it's just that something is likely going on if a baby is relentlessly miserable)
- Greenish, frothy stools (when breastfeeding, this can also be a sign of a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance)
- Mucousy stools
- Runny nose or congestion
- Rash, often pin dot around face and hairline, although it can be anywhere on body
- Gassiness
- Spitting up profusely (not vomiting, just spitting up after most feedings, especially with curdly spit up - some babies do just seem to spit up a lot, though, and that tends to be more of a laundry issue)
- Poor weight gain
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Discomfort after feeding (also can be due to breast feeding related over supply)
- Blood in stools (can also be due to over supply)
If you find any of these, or many of these, are true of your baby, it is possible he or she might have a dairy or other food sensitivity. The most common allergens these days are dairy, corn, wheat, peanuts, fish, soy, and egg. However, it is possible to be allergic to anything. That isn't to scare you though. It is possible to figure out what is bothering your baby, through an elimination diet yourself, or allergy testing.
A doctor, chiropractor, or other health care provider with the ability to muscle test have resources for checking the body for allergies. No test is 100%, but at the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is that you and your baby will make it through this. Food sensitivities are often outgrown and there are many resources for living with and eliminating them!
