How to tell if your baby has a dairy allergy or sensitivity
83
The signs, the symptoms
Depending on the method of feeding, the results of your observations may or may not affect your diet directly, Mom! Regardless, adjustments may need to be made for your baby's diet if you find any of the following present:
- Unexplained fussiness (babies are generally happy unless something is going on - not to say it's anyone's fault, it's just that something is likely going on if a baby is relentlessly miserable)
- Greenish, frothy stools (when breastfeeding, this can also be a sign of a hindmilk/foremilk imbalance)
- Mucousy stools
- Runny nose or congestion
- Rash, often pin dot around face and hairline, although it can be anywhere on body
- Gassiness
- Spitting up profusely (not vomiting, just spitting up after most feedings, especially with curdly spit up - some babies do just seem to spit up a lot, though, and that tends to be more of a laundry issue)
- Poor weight gain
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Discomfort after feeding (also can be due to breast feeding related over supply)
- Blood in stools (can also be due to over supply)
If you find any of these, or many of these, are true of your baby, it is possible he or she might have a dairy or other food sensitivity. The most common allergens these days are dairy, corn, wheat, peanuts, fish, soy, and egg. However, it is possible to be allergic to anything. That isn't to scare you though. It is possible to figure out what is bothering your baby, through an elimination diet yourself, or allergy testing.
A doctor, chiropractor, or other health care provider with the ability to muscle test have resources for checking the body for allergies. No test is 100%, but at the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is that you and your baby will make it through this. Food sensitivities are often outgrown and there are many resources for living with and eliminating them!

Thanks, Lora. Elimination diets are not what most would call fun, but if you focus on what you can eat, rather than what you are eliminating... it is doable. We've essentially been doing one for almost 18 months. I'm also a La Leche League Leader, so I have lots of experience with Mommas and babies!
Great information. One thing I would like to add is that there is a really good testing system called the Vega Test. It can check not only for allergies but even more important for the potential underlying malfunction of the intestine system. Imbalances there can often cause allergies and targeting a balance is often more effective than going for dietary changes.
Thank you for the add! I am not familiar with the Vega Test - I'll go check it out.
Our little guy had consentan ear infections and was always unhappy. Every time he would drink his bottle I could hear the mucous in his throat. Doctors had tried to figure out what was wrong with him. Finally I told the doctor I thought he was allergic to his milk. They took him off the milk and he started to be a really good baby. He also could not drink soy milk. In those days living way up north we had to go to another town to get the formula he needed.
Very good information on this hub.
Wow, Moonlake! It sounds like you were very determined to do whatever you could ot help your baby be at peace... a wonderful parent :o) Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for taking time and doing research on this subject i've been reading a lot about colon cleansing and using ColonOX
Good info. I was very blessed with none of my children having any food sensitivities.
Useful info for the new Mom. My new granddaughter spits up a lot and you have pointed out avenues to explore. Thanks

This is great info, especially coming from someone who's 'been there' and the elimination diets are hard and the outcome of the tests are hard to see, but seeing the difference it makes on the baby is worth it!!!!
