James Bond The man and the legend
When I was young
When I was young around thirteen or fourteen I read my first James Bond book, Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. I loved the quintessential spy genre, the cool spy with gadgets. M his boss ( M was a man back then) and Q with his great cars and gadgets.
Bond was created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming. The name James Bond was the blandest name Ian Fleming could choose as he wanted the name to be incidental to the character. He chose the surname from a writer of bird book in Jamaica.
I loved the character, the way he dressed, his style. I loved the way he ordered a drink. Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred, straight up with a twist, hold the vermouth. He was a man’s man an action hero, a believable superman. The fact that he had a license to kill 007.
The Russians were the baddies. The cold war was on. This book dated back to about 1960 or perhaps a little earlier. The book had a tinge of sadness. Bond’s wife Tracey was killed by SMERSH a Russian secret service arm. It was great read.
Shortly after that I read Moonraker and devoured all there was to read about Bond. I also then read about Ian Fleming who too was a fascinating man.
Ian Fleming
Fleming was a journalist as well as a naval intelligence officer and it is rumoured that Bond was based on an idealized version of himself embellished no doubt by his journalistic background too. Fleming was a bit of a romantic himself and lived on a Jamaican estate called Goldeneye. You can see here too a hint of some of the names and locations for his bond books.
During World War II, Fleming was in the British naval intelligence, and like Bond attained the Rank of Commander
After the war, he was a journalist and Fleming was sent to Russia to cover news for The Times, but was actually working as a spy for the British government. This also no doubt added grist to the Bond Mill. Fleming was one of the first authors to mention actual products when describing Bond’s likes and dislikes such as Saville Row suits, Sobranies, Rolex watch and the Aston Martin car. Once the movie (Dr No) came out (we saw it here towards the end of 1963) I took to wearing silver sharkskin suits with a white straight handkerchief in the pocket, thus emulating my hero in my dress for work.
Fleming wrote 12 books and two short stories. The first film made was Dr No and featured Sean Connery as Bond. Fleming approved of Connery.
The books
The books were:
Casino Royale
Live and Let Die
Moonraker
Diamonds Are Forever
From Russia, with Love
Doctor No
Goldfinger For Your Eyes Only
Thunderball
The Spy Who Loved Me
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
You Only Live Twice
The short stories were:
The Man with the Golden Gun
Octopussy
The Movies
The official list of films made were:
1. Dr. No (1962)
2. From Russia With Love (1963)
3. Goldfinger (1964)
4. Thunderball (1965)
5. You Only Live Twice (1967)
6. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
7. Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
8. Live and Let Die (1973)
9. The Man with the Golden Gun (1974)
10. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
11. Moonraker (1979)
12. For Your Eyes Only (1981)
13. Octopussy (1983)
14. A View to a Kill (1985)
15. The Living Daylights (1987)
16. Licence to Kill (1989)
17. GoldenEye (1995)
18. Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
19. The World is Not Enough (1999)
20. Die Another Day (2002)
21. Casino Royale (2006)
22. Quantum of Solace (2008)
I enjoyed all the movies and unlike most movies from books I was not disappointed with the translation into the movie. My favorites were perhaps Live and Let Die and for You eyes only.
The Actors
The actors who played Bond over the years were:
· Sean Connery (1962-1983)
· George Lazenby (1969)
· Sir Roger Moore (1971-1985)
· Timothy Dalton (1987-1989)
· Pierce Brosnan (1995-2002)
· Daniel Craig (2006-)
Personally I liked both Connery and Roger Moore as Bond. Daniel Craig in my mind is also a credible Bond.. I am not sure about Pierce Brosnan.
The movies of course created a cult of beautiful Bond girls over the years and who could forget them. Also the Theme songs were special too. The standard has been maintained over nearly 40 years and that in itself is certainly something.

- Dita Von Teese
Glamour, beauty and sensuality are all incarnated in one person: Dita Von Teese. The Queen of chic and sophisticated striptease or as Vogue magazine called her the âqueen of the burlesque revivalâ. Graceful and talented Dita is not only a dancer, she is a one-woman show, and she has managed to bring back striptease and fetishism from the former glamour and elegance of the Belle époque. - 11 months ago

Great Hub. Everyone loved Bond. I remember taking one of my old girlfreinds to see Octopussy and I couldn't stop giggling when asking for tickets.
Patty Yes When you look at the minutae of the Bond era there are amazing bits of Trivia. Did you know that one of the Bond girls is now a "desperate housewife"? Guess which one!
Hi Rocking Joe. As you no doubt know, almost all the Bond girls had risque names and of course Octopussy, based on a short story, was the only title with a risque name.
Thanks for stopping by and your encouraging comments. Much appreciated
Call back the past, sneaking into the Bond movies, as I was only 10 and the movies were censored as 4 to 12 here in South Africa. Thanks Sixty.
Sean Connery is still my favorite Bond, but I also appreciate Pierce Brosnan because the man is very sexy.
Rodney Yes, Bond has been around over 40 years. it certainly brings back memories of my life too over that period.
Sweetie Pie Yes I guess Peirce Brosnan was (is?) sexy. My problem is that Roger Moore was the saint and Pierce Brosnan was Remington Steele Wheras Connery and now Daniel Craig are Bond.
Thank you both for stopping by and commenting. Your input is much appreciated as always.
Yeah I like Bond - a gentleman's gentleman and quite a lady killer, too! Though I like Connery for sentimental reasons, Craig seem to emanate a more human feel to the character which for all I know could be attributed to the updating of the franchise.
Great hub sixty! :D
Chirs my sentiments exactly perhaps the modernisation is the key factor regarding Craig?
Enjoyed this hub sixtyorso - brought back memories - somehow for me, there could never be another Bond other than Sean Connery - though I like Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig as actors - what's not to like LOL! But Sean Connery had a certain style that fitted the character so well!
Bond was/is awesome. My only experience was the films, but about a year ago I ordered a set of them on ebay and devoured them over the weekend. What fun! When I was a little kid, we had a Bond electric car race track, with one of the cars being the Astin-Martin. You jumped over things from one side of a bridge to the other, busted through a brick wall, and all kinds of fun stuff!
Great hub, Sixty!
Shalini Thanks for your feedback and comments. Yes Connery was a great Bond and is still a great actor. The Bond genre gives eye candy for all tastes.
CR Yes bond seems to bring out the inner child in all of us. I spent forty years growing old with Bond and he is to some extent my point of reference over the years. The franchise holders still manage to keep that certain sense of elan and style going even now. Thanks for your comments and praise. in fact praise from the master hubber himself is most welcome.
I would like to think so sixty - a move to contemporarise the character. Bond is made more human now - he actually even died in Casino Royale, good thing there was Eva Green's character! :D
Chris I think the humanising factor is perhaps because of the PC world we live and of course appealing to a wider (and younger, more educated) audience?
I agree, to wident the audience base. :D
Sadly I guess more out with the old in with the new!
Basically that was a round about way of telling me I was calling the Bond guys by the wrong names :). Sorry I did not know their correct names, I just thought they were all James Bond lol.
Hi Sweetie Pie No you are perfectly correct. It is just that these actors played other characters before they took on the Bond role and for me they were always, to an extent, the previous character. Roger Moore was the Saint in a TV series before he played Bond and Pierce Brosnan was Remington Steele (a series too) before he played Bond. The others played Bond with no previous associations.
Okay I get you, jusught maybe I had their names wrong because it has been awhile since I watched a Bond movie.
Ok Great!
My name is Bond, Marisue Bond.
or so it was for 24 years of my life. Needless to say, with a maiden name of Bond, James Bond caught my eye. A lover of all adventure, I took to the movies then and now like magic.
I did not know this about the behind the scenes history, so you have once again enlightened me.
Couldn't pick a favorite...loved them all -- Sean, ooo la la... Roger Moore...the stuff a young girls dreams are made of....sigh. I injected myself into all the movies as a teen....I was one of the girls...
Imagination takes us far...haha
Hi Marisue It seems as though this Hub has been a "callback the past" nostalgia moment for most of us "older" folk. Thanks so much for your contribution and for supporting me as always. It is very gratifying.
I love all the James bond movies I mean what man wouldnt dream to become James bond lol A great hub sixtyorso
Thanks Mulder Lng time no hear from you. Glad to see you back. Is it because we thumped you guys at cricket? Only kidding.
