Lifting Your Spirits

We have all had times when someone has done something that hurt us or some incident has left us very disappointed.  Many years ago when feeling that I had been let down by a friend, I took some advice that is worth passing on.  I let the incident drag me down for a couple of days before finding the words I needed to reverse my mood.  The advice is biblical and very straightforward.  I believe anyone can do this, and when I have remembered to put it to use, it has never failed me.

Here are the words, slightly paraphrased, but true to the original.  They really don’t need any interpretation.  Just put them into action.

Let your thoughts dwell on these things:

  • Whatever is true
  • Whatever is honorable
  • Whatever is right
  • Whatever is pure
  • Whatever is lovely
  • Whatever is highly thought of or known to be good
  • Whatever is excellent or worthy of praise

This is taken from Philippians 4:8.

The focus of your thoughts is a powerful tool for dealing with your moods, your tensions, and your challenges.  The Apostle Paul wrote those words, and I think they indicate why, just a few sentences later (verse 11) he was able to say, “…I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”
