What is "smart"?
Momma always says there's an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they're going. Where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes. -- Forrest Gump
If a man like Forrest Gump can learn to read people from their shoes, then he ranks in the upper rafters of dedecutive reaonsing with Doug Furhman, Sam Spade, Perry Mason & Paul drake, and Dixon Hill (Star Trek: The Next Generation®). IQ isn't everything, but heart can be,
Gump was a good soul in a bad world -- How many of these do we find? Even the abused and wayward Jenny left her LSD cloud to come aground and marry her for the remainder of her short AIDS-riddled life. His love for her was unconditional and he leveled the childhood shack in which she'd been meted out so much abuse.
Forrest Gump was simple and honest and knew what love is. Wishing that there could be such people in the workd, I have not yet found a Forrest Gump. However, I agree with him, that he would be a good husband.
If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. It's the hard that makes it great. - Tom Hanks
Well said. Honesty is hard once you lose it
The entertainer Tom Hanks takes on each role full force in such a way as few actors can accomplish. Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman are two that come to mind. Hanks's Gumpish speech patterns unintentionally carried over a it into his film Apollo 13 and made me smile.
Forrest Gump paradies were everywhere, including in the animated TV series Veggietales (see the film clip).
I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. -- Forrest Gump

The Work of Tom Hanks
A full bibliography can be found at IMDB.com, but specific features at all phases in Tom Hanks's career have impressed me.
Thomas Jeffery Hanks, Baby Boomer -- Born July 9, 1956
As his parents perfected a marriage dissolution in California, Hanks lived with several step families, which gave him an uprooted childhood (fortunately, he reports no abuse). Having no recognized acting abilities in high school or college, he eventually went to local auditions and was cast in community theater, after which he went to act in Cleveland, Ohio. By the 2000s, he'd been chosen America's Favorite Movie Star by Harris Polls for 2002, 2004, and 2005.
Favorites from the work of Tom Hanks:
Bosom Buddies (1980 - 1982)- With Peter Scolari, he played a pair of junior advertising professionals that need a place to live when their apartment building is demolished. A female coworker invites them to her hotel - the Susan B. Anthony Hotel, where no men are permitted except in the lobby, Therefore, the two men must take on the personas and attire of women, switching back and forth between work and home.
The Man with One Red Show (1985)- Hanks plays protagonist Richard Drew, whose friend has hidden all of his shoes except for one mismatched pair, one of which is red. The odd shoes become the focus of a CIA surveillance project.
Nothing In Common (1986) - A come-to-reckoning film for a man (Hanks) and his dad (Jackie Gleason).
Dragnet (1987) - Comedy crime story based on the TV series Dragnet. John Aykroyd plays Joe Friday, the nephew of the original Friday, while Hanks plays his partner Pep Streebeck. Harry Morgan appears as an updated and promoted Captain Gannon.
A League of Their Own (1992) - Story of the first professional women's baseball league.
Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - A widower's son advertises and a new wife for his dad.
Philadelphia (1993) - An attorney stricken with AIDS fights for his rights.
Forrest Gump (1994) - A good Valentine's Day movie. For the kids, find dozens of free Valentine's Day Coloring Pages at the link.
Apollo 13 (1995)- Historical drama with Gary Sinese.
From the Earth to the Moon (1998) - TV historical drams, mini-series.
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - A history teacher serving in World War II heads a platoon sent to find return the last of 4 US Army brothers, home because the first three were killed in action.
The Green Mile (1999) - Miracles on death row in a Stephen King story.
Band of Brothers (2001)- TV docudrama, miniseries, about US Servicemen in the World War II European operations.
The Road to Perdition (2002) - A gangster film based on the comic series Road to Perdition. Tm Hanks portrays a hit man for an Irish organized crime syndicate in Chicago during the Depression. While he attempt to to prevent his young son from learning about his job, he is pursued by another hit man, Jude Law.
Catch Me If You Can (2002) - Based on a true story. Hanks plays a federal agent assigned the task of bringing down a top notch embezzler and impersonator played by Leonardo DiCaprio.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding/Life (2002 - Producer) - Funny and well done film was better than the TV series.
The Terminal (2004) - An Eastern European is stranded in a major US Air Terminal when his country falls to invading forces and he cannot return. He uses his knowledge of engineering to make a living in the air terminal.
Charlie Wilson's War (2007) - True story of American government's covert intervention in 1980s' Afghanistan. Co-stars Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Evan Almighty (2007, Executive Producer) - Noah's Ark in the 21st century. Hilarious and just as effective!
John Adams (2008, Producer) - HBO Mini-series portraying the intrigue of America's early presidential elections.
Big Love (2006 - 09, Executive Producer)- Creepy and disturbing look at the LDS church and its members. Actually, after viewing it twice, I can't watch it. It's creative, but too strange. However, the show is likely to make BIG BUCKS$$$$ from the schadenfreude of the viewing public. And of course, sex brings in the loot and polygamy can be fascinating.

Strange New Worlds
Tom Hanks is involved in strange stories on film since the mid-2000s. These include Big Love, The Davinci Code, and Angels and Demons. As a fan of Law and Order, Special Victim's Unit as well, he likey has a host of odd story ideas emanating from his television that he may produce in the future.
As an aerospace exploration and Star Trek® fan, he might be successful in the science fiction and futurist genre, and this is my hope.
Until he produces some science fiction, I'll skip some of the odder offerings of late and rewatch favorites such as Forrest Gump, John Adams, and Catch Me If you Can.

When the news broke last summer, it seemed like a natural fit: Steven Spielberg and the remake of Harvey , the whimsical 1950 James Stewart movie about the friendship between a man and an invisible 6-foot rabbit. Now comes news that Spielberg is dropping out in part because he couldn't get Tom Hanks or Robert Downey Jr. to fill Stewart's sizable shoes, Variety 's Michael Fleming reported:

Thanks for adding that. He did work on a documentary featuring Lincoln as well.
Patti: I am a huge Tom Hanks fan and a fan of Forrest Gump as well. I had been given the book by my father, who has been given the book by his brother--an english professor and author of several scholarly books as well. I loved it. This was about 10 years before the movie came out, which I eagerly anticipated. I went to see a matinee by myself on a lark (I was driving by and there it was.) I loved it and have seen it more times than I can count.
I agree with your list of Tom Hanks work also, though to my embarassment, I have not seen "Red Shoes". Surprised not to see Cast Away. I've seen that umpteen times as well.
Great job putting it all together. It was a pleasure for me!
On a side note: I wrote the first Veggie Tales script, before it was anything, back in the mid-eighties. Just a couple who lived near my father with this idea. They gave me a bunch of notes and some characters and the basic story, and I wrote them a script. Then, it turned out they had no money and wanted me to work for free. A lot of people had been giving me that song and dance around that time, so I declined and took my script back. It had nothing to do with music then, but damn, am I kicking myself in the ass now! Ha!
Christoph - YOU wrote the first Veggie Tales! Certainly an entertaining idea and eventually lucrative from what I understand. I read that Phil Vischer went bankrupt and Mike Nawrocki became VP of Development for Big Idea. I thought it odd that "Jonah" grossed $24,000,000 and immediately laid off 30 staff simultaneously.
I saw Castaway and enjoyed it, but for me, once was enough for that one. Apollo 13, I could watch once a week.
Thanks for commenting - I'll remember you as an original Veggie Tales writer.
Today's Larry Cucumber and Bob Tomato remind me of Harold and Red Green on the Red Green Show.
Patti: I wonder if it's still the same people? Maybe they sold the idea. And, yes, I wrote the first, but it was never made. It sits in my basement, lonely and forgotten, until today anyway. Actually I came across the script just a couple of months ago. I had forgotton about it, and I read it and was like, "Holy cow, this is Veggie Tales!" It was even called Veggie Tales. I had never even seen the show. I loved the music and actually, I would be perfect for that show, as a voice actor too. I should have stayed involved, but hindsight....
I haven't seen the Red Green Show for a long time. I don't think it's on around here. I used to be a faithful viewer though, and watched it whenever. Are they still making them?
Big Idea was taken over by a large corporation in 2004 and used Vischer to write a few scripts. Vischer wrote about losing the company and I received the impression that he felt he controlled it too much and it died. I don't know if it's the same people - they were all from Tennesee. I suppose you could query Big Idea about using your script now. Whole different organization.
Or you could parody your first vegetable script and put it on Hub Pages.
Red Green went out of production two years or so ago, but sometimes reruns are shown. I liked their yearly telethons better than the usual PBS telethon. Much more entertaining.
This was great and I learned so much about him...always liked him but now I know why...Thanks...G-ma :O) Hugs & Peace
Thanks G-Ma!
Isn't Forrest Gump a little old for you?
I don't think Forest Gump is a real person, and I'm not so sure about Tom Hanks. But I loved the Hub! Thanks!
I had no idea about Tom Hanks until I read this. Thanks !
I enjoy Tom Hanks and love all of his roles.
What a good hub. Hanks is one of the most talented, versatile actors around right now, not to mention his other skills.
Karen
Too old? - I think the point is moot, sicne he does not exist. :)
Bruce - So true. Who is real and who is not? Hard to tell in Hollywood.
guidebaba - Interesting isn't it? I can't believe all the work he has accomplished.
Karen - Thanks for commenting -- He is versatile, that's true. I wonder what other stranger things he'll do in addition to docudramas and comedy. He's surprising.
Great Hub Patti. I really like Tom hanks as an actor. Strangely enough, I almost put a Utube video of him into my Bond hub!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOcQr-2-pE
That's an entertaining video, so thanks for giving us the link, sixtyorso. Startling to see him holding a gun. But I liked Perdition, so perhaps he'll play a gangster once again.
Surprisingly for a person hasn't been to watch many movies, I've watched quite a lot of Tom Hanks shows. LOL Thanks Patty for this hub. I enjoyed reading it. :-)
I'm glad you liked it, ripplemaker. I also don't view many films lately.
I enjoy Tom Hanks movies
Let's see the trailers of "Angels and Demons" soon and we can see how that will will be. Not as creeepy as DaVinci Code, I hope.
I would marry him too, Patty! Great hub. Loved it.
Hi Netters!
How many more would like to marry Forrest Gump?
I would, I would, I'd marry Forrest Gump! I must have watched a League of their Own a hundred times, I love that movie... and also Catch Me if you Can, I loved that movie too. Tom Hanks, I'd marry him too when he's not too busy being Mr. Gump!
To all the sisters who want to marry him, think about Philadelphia!
Hi Dotti1! - Thanks for a fan's insight.
Sixty! = Just means that men want to marry him too. LOL
Thanks for a great Hub...very interesting, as all your Hubs are..
I'm a big fan of Hanks also...he was absolutely amazing in Forrest Gump..I can only think of this film as a child-like purity of heart and an unflagging love of his fellow man...
My favorite Tom Hanks movie is " Joe and the Volcano "....I love philosophy and this film reeks of it...
Hi Patty, Great hub and kinda tribute to Tom Hanks! Like all your hubs they are very good and you never know what your gonna get!:) lol at poor pun!
First met Tom in Splash and never stopped "watching" him anywhere and everywhere, whenever and wherever. I am a confessed Tom stalker or is it Peeping Tom? LOL. Thumbs up!
Interesting hub!! I loved Forrest Gump!! I also loved that you included the Veggie Tales video!! My kids loved Veggie Tales, and I kind of miss it, now that my daughter has outgrown them.
maven101 - Thanks for mentioning Joe and the Volcano - this is one I've been meaning to view. Pure of heart is right - he recently stated that people should not be disappointed in him because he is making projects that are unlike his others - DaVinci Code and Big Love and some others that are about different subjects but make money. Liek he said about the Code - "It's just a movie."
compu-smart -- thanks for that pun, I think it's nice.
dayzeebee - You could start a new club - The Peeping Toms!
Anna Marie - I watch veggie tales and have never had children, although I show them to the children of friends occasionally. It was an adult that suggested them to me at the start. Have you seen the related 3-2-1- Penguins about penguins in space? Kinda like the penguins in Madagascar. :) Enjoy!

Interesting fact:
Tom Hanks is a descendant of Abe Lincoln.
