If The Weight Of Your Kids Baffles You, Take These Steps Immediately

Updated on August 20, 2011

If your kids are gaining in weight, it is high time you attend to this problem immediately. But, the point to remember is that your kids need guidance because they are too young to make any decisions. You and your spouse should bestow special attention on them and make a few changes to the way the family eats and lives. The following few tips may be of help:

- You must guide your kids to have sufficient physical activity. You should include a good fitness regimen to their daily routine. The fitness regimen should be made interesting and enjoyable. If you include a lot of fun activities into this regimen, children will be very eager to participate actively in these sessions. You can ask them to bring their close friends also to these sessions and that will improve the camaraderie among them. There will be a healthy competition among them also if you have innovative and interesting competitions in these fitness sessions.

- You must encourage your children to eat more of fresh fruits and vegetables and less of sweets, ice creams, cakes, pastries, etc. You should also ensure that they keep away from processed foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a lot of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and if kids get these nutrients, they will be alert both physically and mentally. They will be bright in their studies also. Vitamins and minerals will increase their immunity against diseases. They will not be affected by common illnesses like cough, cold, throat infection, etc. You should be a role model to them and if you and your spouse eat such good nutritious foods, they will also learn to choose such healthy foods.

- They should be discouraged from drinking bottled and sugary drinks, beverages, etc. Instead, they should be taught the importance of drinking plenty of water. They can also take low-fat milk, fruit juices without sugar, etc. instead of bottled drinks and beverages.

- They should be diverted from watching television by inculcating in them the habit of reading good books or magazines. You should first give them highly interesting books. Once they develop the habit of reading, you can try giving them more serious topics. The problem is that as elders, we do not refrain from watching television and therefore, we are not able to restrain them. So, if you want your children to understand the futility of watching the television, you should first set an example. You can organize exciting fitness sessions when the kids are having such free time. This will divert their minds away from the television. Another step is to remove the television sets from the bedrooms so that children can have the required sleep. By sitting in front of the TV, they will not be spending any calories and this will contribute to their weight increase.

- Children should be taught the importance of eating breakfast without fail. They should know that if they skip breakfast, they will be dull throughout the day. Likewise, they should not be encouraged to eat outside food. If they develop the habit of eating fast foods and junk foods, it will be very difficult for you to monitor their weight. These foods not only do not supply any nutrition to them but may increase their weight enormously also.

- You should infuse positivity into their minds. They should be continuously motivated and encouraged that they are capable of accomplishing great things in life. If they have such a positive attitude, they will get confidence that they can shed the unnecessary weight and fat and this will definitely yield excellent results.
