Iran Hangs Woman Despite High Court Ruling

Delara Darabi, was a vibrant 23 year old woman living in Rasht, Iran. She was hung in Rasht on Saturday who had received an unfair trial and was convicted of murder as a juvenile. She was only 17 when the nightmare began. The nightmare resulted in her being beaten and coerced to confess for a murder of her father's cousin. The true guilty party, her 19 yr old boyfriend, Amir, actually had the done the act.
After the trial, a top Iranian judge had agreed to a two month stay of execution to review it. During that she would remain in prison. Local authorities in Rasht, basically ignored it, and went ahead with the hanging. Iran's head of their judiciary has no control or authority over their own lower level judges.
On Friday, Delara called her parents in a frantic, she told them that she could see them preparing for her execution and the noose. She begged her mom to save her. Her attorney had only been informed after she was dead. This was in violation of Iran's own criminal law requiring that a 48 hrs notice must be given. All of this underhanded action by the local authorities was to avoid domestic and international protests which might have saved her life.
So far, Iran has executed 140 people this year and has executed 42 children since 1990. As for the male, true murderer, he got 10 yrs in prison.
