Is Your Past Controlling Your Life?

Updated on July 22, 2012

We all come from somewhere. We all have a past. The question is, Does that past control your life? Should your past control your life? I say absolutely not. We cannot let our past define who we are or we will never be able to become the person whom we are meant to be.When the past controls today, you have no growth or advancement as a person. Yes the past helps to form us but it should never be allowed the power to define us and henceforth control our lives. Holding on to yesterday leaves no room for tomorrow to blossom. You can't let the past control your life.

Living in past glories or past hurts has no benefit to you as an evolving person. It gives the past way to much power over the present. If you won't move forward from the past glories and pain, that is just were you will stay. There is no joy in living in the past. You need to seize the present and move forward to your future. Remember what is past is past and will never be again. Does that mean we will or should forget yesterday? I say no. We should smile at the good that was and learn from the pain and sorrow. Then we need to embrace who we are and who we will become. Let today define who we are today and we will continue to grow into who we ultimately will be.

Each day is a fresh start so let's leave our old baggage behind and move forward as we evolve and our lives become something fresh and new each day. Does that mean to forgive wrongs done to us? My answer is yes. I think that forgiveness is the only way to take back your power to move forward. Forgive the wrongs and be grateful for the kindness then move forward. To many people have wasted their lives holding on to the past and have missed the wonders of the present because they couldn't see beyond yesterday.Forgiveness isn't always so easy, but it is a decision you must make. I find that it is hard for me to hold animosity towards someone when I pray for them. I also pray for the power to forgive those whom I feel have hurt me. This gives me a chance to release them from my unforgiveness as I release myself from past hurts.

Don't let yesterdays pains and regrets control the rest of your life. Don't let what has gone by define who you are. Live your life in anticipation each day . Enjoy what the day holds for you and anticipate the tomorrow that is headed your way. look back on the past with understanding that you are no longer there and be grateful for the joys and stronger for the pain. Remember, the past does not define who you are so it cannot be allowed control of your life. Let it go.
