Keeping Deadlines—Is It Really That Important?
62
We all deal with deadlines in some form each day. How we deal with them and whether or not we utilize them to further promote our own productivity is key to personal success. However, some people don’t view deadlines in this manner. Rather, they think of deadlines as their enemy, as something that is dreaded. This poses the question, are deadlines really that important?
Deadlines enable productivity.
To be the most productive, you have to be able to meet deadlines. If you cannot follow through and accomplish a procedure in the amount of time you have to do it in, chances are you will become the least likely person people will turn to when they need to get a job done. Recognizing and keeping deadlines will help you be more productive.
Deadlines prevent procrastination.
In addition to being more productive, those looming deadlines serve to avert procrastination. When you are aware of what needs to be done and the time frame in which it must be achieved, you will be a lot less likely avoid important tasks throughout the day.
Deadlines promote focus.
Another way deadlines help is to keep you focused. Those who work without deadlines tend to waffle and flit from one task to another, instead of sticking to one thing until it is complete. When you work on a deadline, you are much more likely to create a plan of action, which helps you focus to see it through to the completion.
So as you can see, keeping deadlines truly is important. Without deadlines, you would flounder, waste time on meaningless things, and lose all focus in a matter of moments. Deadlines might seem a little stiff at times, but they can be extremely helpful in developing your personal skills. So choose your deadlines, stick with them and make them your friend, not your enemy.

I live with deadlines, most I set for myself. Somehow, just knowing I have a deadline to meet, motivates me to complete the task. Thanks for reminding me. Have to go now, I have a deadline to meet (smile).
