The Original Lesbian Dating Sites
86Lesbian dating sites are a popular topic on the Internet. Lets face it being out and gay has been more acceptable for women than for men ever since Queen Victoria famously refused to make lesbiansim illegal at the same time as homosexuality (the term ony applied to men at the time) - because she couldn't believe such a practice existed.
In fact at the time that Queen Vic made her decision the adjective "lesbian" referred to something from the Greek Island, Lesbos. The concept that women might be sexually attracted to women was really beyond the language of polite Victorian society.
The modern use of the term lesbian is because of Sappho, a 6th century BCE poet who lived on Lesbos was unusual both as a Greek female poet and she wrote poetry about women and attracted young women as followers to her - for whom she declared her love. Little of her work has surivived and its unknown whether Sappho really was a lesbian in the 21st century sense of the word but she is certainly responsible for a lot of confusion about the term in modern English!
So it seemed to me the best place to go find lesbian dating sites - would, naturally enough be on the island of Lesbos itself.
Now getting to Lesbos these days is not at all difficult - the popular island has many direct flights during the summer season from UK, France and elsewhere in northern Europe to Mytilene (MJT). Alternatively you can fly from Athens or catch a ferry from Athen's port Piraeus.
On all Greek island the nightlife and the dating scene is focused around the village square where the open-sided tavernas spill out into the night with extra tables and a great deal ouzo and delicious fresh Greek food can make for a very pleasant way to meet new people and talk and dance the night away.
Best Dating and Meeting Spots in Lesbos
Mytilini the capital dates back to 3000BC has not just a beautiful historic heritage but a vibrant modern dining and nightlife scene. This is the happening place for those looking to party on in modern day Lesbos.
Other popular resort towns include:
Anaxos: Good swimming beach with a pleasant restaurant strip along the foreshore.
Eressos: Inland from popular Skala Eressos an historic refuge from pirates which dates back to the 16th century. Boasts many popular restaurants and bars.
Molyvos (Mithymna): on the north coast is not only naturally beautiful but home to a number of folk festivals and art exhibitions.
Petra: features the famous church Virgin Mary of the Sweet Kiss which is perched on top of a 30m high rock. Its more a family orientated town in the summer but there is still some fun nightife
Nightlife in Lesbos
There are quite a number of other towns as well. There is no shortage of place to find a good time in Lesbos.
If you are new to Greek ways then remember that the national drink is ouzo - though those without too much tolerance may want to start slow with the excellent local cold beers - which are always nice after a hot day on the beach.
Greek food is based of fresh food especially the excellent local fish and of course eggplant (aubergine). Order a number of dishes to try out the familiar and unfamiliar - the dishes will all come out together - the concept of entree and main doesn't really exist here - instead its more a mix and match. Octopus and moussaka are always safe places to start.
Nightclubs operate well into the morning - many of the larger towns bring in expat DJ's for the tourist season but you will find local places as well - if you look a little harder. Greece is a modern European country and women travelling together or alone shouldn't feel particularly threatened but its always wise to keep your wits about you especially late in the night.

I went to Lesbos last year (for a HOMOEOPATHY seminar of all things...with men...). Had a lovely time it's beautiful and unspoiled as an island and the lesbian bar where I set up laptop was amazingly helpful - charged my laptop during the day and let me sit and work and drink at night... just what I mean by "working from anywhere"
Great article, Lissie.
It is an island that I hope to visit one day - the Ouzo produced on Lesvos is the finest, and many of the tavernas distill their own unique type. Sounds like heaven!
The island looks gorgeous. And I like your impressions of the place, too -- you have a lovely writing style. Neat.
Hey, Lissie! Great take on the topic :-) I had a fabulous time in Lesbos, I think it was the first accepting and open space I ever went to aside from SF, and the place was such a paradise on top of the perceived freedom that my memories of it are very fond indeed :-)
It is about time people can trade information like this without dealing with a song and dance. It this kind of thing that makes me happy to be living in this time.
Some really great places I'd love to visit there. Now, if only I were a woman...
Thanks for the comments everyone. Julie-Ann that sounds like the perfect setup re bar/drinking/laptop!
Thanks Sufi - I was a bit nervous that I'd get this wrong - this is a pure research piece - I am neither Lesbian nor have I been to Lesbos. I've been to the Greek Islands though and want to go back - and Lesbos is actually now on my list - and not just for its name. Now Ouzo and I have had a bad relationship until now but if you are saying I should try it again on Lesbos I'll do that to!
@Teresa - I've done a lot of travel writing :-) Thanks
@Elena - that's really good to know -I felt really safe in Greece as a straight woman and I figured that it would be similar for gay women -but I didn't want to put out the wrong info - thanks for the comment.
@Peter - the ads I am getting on this hub in Australia are hilarious: lesbian dating sites sure - but also an australian govt ad reminding people to register their lesbian relationship before the end of the financial year - priceless!
@Jazz - I believe they don't discriminate...
Some great nightlife in Paris too where you can find a club for everyones taste.
I see you beat me to "sites' lol
There you go, Lissie - a good article about the ouzo on Lesvos.

I have a lesbian friend in the UK who visited Lesvos, and had a wonderful time - culture and history mixed with great nights out!
Give us a shout if you ever visit Greece and fancy stopping in the Peloponnese :)
sufi - Ouzo and shopping - its a date!
Lol very nicely done young lady ; )
Nice Hub. I holidayed there some years back, very facinating history. But we've been like this since the dawn of time, I think. (Well, I'm speaking for myself, obviously!)
