I've been meaning to write this for a while now, my reverence for the method behind art, specifically, this time, in cinema.
Artists and filmmakers have a definitive creative arc. There is calculated logic behind the unfolding of a good story and in film, directors/writers want you to discover things in proper order. It's oh-so tempting to read the last page of the book or fast forward to the end of the movie, but in my mind I'd be cheating artistic effort. Granted, some things aren't worth the effort and are so poorly made that you're doing the world a favor by turning it off or tossing it aside. Read it backwards if you want. Hmmm, Pauly Shore and Danielle Steele come to mind for some reason.
However, when dealing with true brilliance, or even fairly good for that matter, I have to recommend sticking it out to the bitter end. The chronology is put together for a good reason, intended to elicit appropriate emotion at the appropriate moment. In the same way, I respect each brush stroke of a gorgeous painting, I respect the grand team work involved in the major art of moving pictures. What's the fun in reading a murder mystery if you already know who-done-it? Think of the pleasure you can gain by figuring it out yourself. Exercise some brain cells and give kudos to an artist at work.
