Make Up For Men
Once upon a time, in a land not very far away at all, men and women both used to wear make up. Wearing make up was considered to be a mark of refinement and good breeding. It showed that one cared enough about the people around one to impress them with a nicely painted face.
Then terrible things happen. The unwashed French masses rose up and killed anyone remotely aristocratic or aristocratic looking and high fashion was out of style for a while. (I blame the French Revolution for a great deal of the set backs surrounding men's fashion. It really does seem to have been a major turning point.)
When make up and pretty clothing did come back into fashion, it was for women only. For many years, women have cornered the cosmetic market. But men can wear make up, and, like women, when they're doing it right, you won't know they are wearing it at all.
Most celebrity men you see stepping out onto the red carpet have some kind of make up on, and its not just because of the lights. Do you really think male celebrities are born with perfect skin and dreamy dark lashes? No. They are made up just as the women are, but in a more masculine way.
Here are four kinds of subtle make up that men can wear even out on the street.
Concealer | A woman's best friend, concealer covers blemishes, pimples and other skin imperfections that can marr a complexion. It is heavier than foundation and should not be applied all over the face, only in the spots where it is needed.
Foundation | Foundation evens out the skin tone and makes your skin look smooth and blemish free. Foundation can be a blessing or a curse. Lightly applied, it can do wonders for the complexion, however if it is applied with a more liberal hand, one quickly attains a caked on look that isn't flattering on either gender.
Eye Liner | (Also known in male make up circles as 'guyliner'.) Now, you need a steady hand when it comes to eye liner, and it creates quite a dramatic look, so practice at home a lot before you take this look out. On the plus side, plenty of men have already set a precedent for wearing eyeliner, including rough, tough rugby players, so you'll be in established manly man company when you wear it out.
Mascara | Less overtly dramatic than eyeliner, but quite powerful in its own little way. Mascara comes in various shades, and if you don't want it to look as if you are obviously wearing make up, stay away from darker shades, such as black. Brown mascara will lengthen and define your lashes without making you look like a panda.
Tips and Warnings:
- When it comes to make up, eye and lip make up especially, it's not a good idea to share it because of the bacteria associated with the eye and the mouth. Cold sores, conjunctivitis and more can be spread in this fashion.
- Where possible, use a brush. When it comes to foundation, a powder is preferable to liquid as it is much less likely to sink into pores and look obvious. Applied lightly with a brush, it looks very natural.
