Malti-Pom Hybrid Dogs (Maltipom, Pomanese, Pomanees)
76Physical Description
The Malti-Pom, also known as the Pomanese or Pomanees is one of the smaller of the popular hybrid breeds. These canine hybrids have the long coats of both parent breeds, the Maltese and the Pomeranian, plus they also have the feisty temperament and the high energy level associated with the two. The Maltipom is typically a very small dog, not usually measuring more than 12 inches at the shoulder and not weighing more than about 8 to 10 pounds.
The Pomanese has a very alert and expressive face, perhaps best described as almost fox-like in profile and appearance. The eyes are dark and very intelligent looking and the ears are very triangular and may be slightly turned over or carried very erect and pricked. Long hairs fringe the ears as well as the cheeks and the forehead, providing a very soft appearance to the face.
The body of the Malti-Pom is sturdy but not cobby or overly muscular; however these dogs are definitely not fragile for their small size. They have well developed straight front legs and well developed hind quarters. While compact, this hybrid dog is also athletic and activity and enjoys going for walks, spending time outside as well as playing and romping.

Coats can vary from very long to medium in length, with colors ranging from pure white to gray or any variation in between. Brown coat colors with or without white markings are very common. The coat tends to part down the center of the spine like the Maltese and the tail is usually carried in a tight curl over the back, making a plume over the hips.
Temperament
The Malti-Pom is a naturally playful and affectionate small breed, ideally suited to living in close contact with humans. However, like both parent breeds they can also develop bad habits and behaviors if treated like they are the leaders and the family is just part of the pack. Consistent and early obedience training and socialization is important for these dogs to prevent possessiveness and aggression from developing if the dog is spoiled or allowed to run the household.
The Maltipom does very well with children that are old enough to carefully handle and work with the dog. As with most small dog types they don’t tolerate teasing or rough play, so may not be recommended for families with very small children. The Pomanese is a good companion dog for cats, other dogs and even other pets when raised together and well socialized.

Grooming And General Care
These dogs require regular, daily grooming if they are not clipped. The soft, fine coat of this hybrid dog will typically be double, meaning they will shed rather heavily in the spring and fall seasons. The long hair on the forehead is often clipped or put up in a barrette or elastic to prevent irritation to the eyes.
Both parent breeds are prone to slipped stifle so these dogs should not be encouraged to jump up or down which can make the situation much worse. In addition both breeds have eye problems as well as early tooth loss problems, so having both parents health checked before breeding is highly recommended.
