Men Wear Lingerie, Jesus Wore A Dress
(This most excellent title was inspired by reader GoneNylon after I wrote this article about Frilly Dresses For Men.)
Jesus wore a dress. Yes he did. I have plenty of referential artwork to prove it. Jesus was also apparently very European in appearance and had a well trimmed beard, not to mention slightly wavy hair. The artwork also suggests that he spent a great deal of time hanging out with kids, but not in a creepy way, more in a “I am your lord and savior, ooo isn't that a pretty butterfly,” sort of way. The last picture suggests that he may have even been the inspiration for Maria in 'Sound of Music' – except it would seem that Jesus has forgotten his guitar.
Why does it matter than Jesus wore a dress? Well, those who are against the idea of men wearing 'women's' clothing often refer to the unnaturalness of it. They claim it is wrong for a man to want to dress up in a fashion similar to women. But if Jesus did it, then who are we to judge men who wear dresses? Did not Jesus say “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones?” (Hint: No, he didn't.) He did say something similar though, in fact he is quoted as saying: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.” Which is essentially another way of saying 'hey, who among us hasn't wanted to wear something besides jeans and trucker caps'.
Now admittedly, there are a few places where this argument falls down, and I'll point them out so as to save you commmenters the effort. (I'm all about the commenters. Spell check says there is no such word, but we know differently.)
Reasons Why Jesus Wearing A Dress Doesn't Count!
- Everyone wore 'dresses' at the time, so it was a social norm.
- Jesus didn't (as far as we know) wear his 'dress' in order to feel more feminine, which a great many men who wear women's clothing and lingerie do.
Do these factors make it any less right (or more wrong) for a man to embrace his feminine side? I would say not. Jesus was rather preoccupied with allegedly walking on water, healing lepers and communing with Mary Magdalene.
I can't claim to speak for Jesus (unlike those who claim to have a hotline to the risen dead zombie son of God) , but by all accounts, Jesus was all about messing with the status quo and tweaking authorities. Admittedly it didn't go terribly well for him, especially at the end there, but I would think he would appreciate the ability to accept all men and love them as brothers no matter what manner of clothing covered their bodies.
