Minecraft Multiplayer PvP Quick Guide

Updated on April 6, 2011

So you've punched more than a few trees on your own and now you're looking for a more interactive experience. Here is a quick overview of what to expect and what to look for when you start playing on a PvP server.

If you're considering playing multiplayer Minecraft for the purposes of PvP and PvE, you should know a few things. You should know that you're going to need to get rid of your mods. All of them. Most well moderated PvP / PvE servers won't allow modded clients because of the risk that the mods you're using give you an advantage over other players. Flying hacks and wireframe texture packs are particularly frowned upon.

It's also important to read the rules before you start playing. The server may ban certain items, like boats and buckets because of lag, or because they enable griefing. It's your responsibility to know the rules before you start playing. There will probably also be rules surrounding how and where you can kill another player. Make sure you know these in advance so that you don't accidentally grief and so you know when you're being unfairly taken advantage of.

PvP is fairly brutal in Minecraft. If the server you're playing on is well populated, you can be in endless danger. It is important to quickly establish a base and retreat into the depths of the earth in order to not only evade other players, but to gather the resources you're going to need in order to survive.

I recommend PvP to players who are getting sick of the sense of solitude that single player Minecraft inevitably causes. There are only so many castles, so many modern office buildings, so many squid testing stations you can build on your own before things start to get a little bit tedious.

Of course, you could play on a multiplayer creative server if you just want the company of other players, but I find that the ever present danger of being ended by a fellow gamer lends a pleasant edge to Minecraft. Finally it is actually important to build a stealthy shelter and to guard your resources. Finally it really matters if you've got diamond armor and a diamond sword.

Tips For Finding A Good PvP Server

A good PvP server needs good moderation, solid rules and swift enforcement. In any multiplayer scenario you're going to find people who like to cheat and who like to grief (griefing is a term applied to people who go about destroying what other people have made.)

I'd also look for one that offers /lwc chest protection, in other words, the ability to lock chests. There's not much point slaving away for that stack of iron if at the end of the day just anyone can come by and swipe it.

That's it for this quick guide - one final piece of advice, try not to take things too seriously. It is possible that you will get griefed and ganked even on a good server. A server with a solid community will deal with these issues, but they are almost impossible to prevent entirely.

Have fun!
